Car 12v charger in ashtray...

So I'm trying to figure the best way to play my Nano through the car stereo. I'm using an OEM aux cable with a dual aux connector and charge attachment bought from eBay. I've put playlists on the Nano and was thinking of leaving it in the globebox with the wire tucked nicely then going into the charger.

But the sticking point I've noticed is that I can't just leave it plugged in all the time as when the ignition is off it's still charging (which I know is normally a good thing). This I guess will just leave me with a flat battery, not good.

Is there anyway of 'deactivating' this or any other ideas you have...? I can't justify the cost of an Intravee etc. It would be nice just to connect it up tidily and leave it, and it would just charge when the car is running.

you could always use one of these babies.

find an ignition controlled fuse in the fuse box and then use the same supply via this fuse to power the unit up.
the original fuse fits in the lower fuse slot and the new circuit is powered by the upper fuse slot.

It might be just what you want.

thats what i have done hardwiring my road angle to my car.

I used the cd changer fuse, and piggy backed on it, goes if as soon as the ignition is off.

That's great info guys, thanks. Don't really understand it but F-I-L is electrician/engineer so will show him this...next weekend's project sorted

An ipod on charge will probably run your battery down if you leave it plugged in for 2 or 3 months.
