Hi all,

Was wondering if anybody can help with a valuation of my car that has just been written off.
I will be getting a call from insurance sometime this week and would like a guide price in my head before they offer anything stupid.

Just in case

Mercedes Benz E320 SPORT Diesel. 7 Gtronic
2007 on an 07 plate.
83000 miles
FSH
Every toy including Sat Nav,
Command,
Heated Leather and electric adjust.

Immaculate condition.

Thanks if at all possible...

If nobody can help if you google vauxhall value mycar you can get a valuation from them.

Also you might want to start looking for online ads for similar cars as they will offer a lot less than you can buy a similar one for.

When the wife wrote off her last car I did this and they increased their initial offer from 4.5k to just under 6k!!!!

As above, gather adverts from PH, AT etc of similar cars as some book prices can be miles out.

The online 'book' values for my Z4MC ranged from £5k to £7k (including the Vauxhall site).

My base price from the insurer (average of CAP & Glasses) was £9.5k - so there's some discrepancy between publicly available guides and the insurer's guides. In my case there was an additional £4-5k for mods to be added on.

Thank you very much all,

Between the Trade in price that Cap and Vauxhall gave me and the Retail prices found on AT, PH, Etc I now have a value.

I doubt the Insurance guys will have the same one but it gives me a haggling point. Only had the car 4 months and paid 8K for it.

The trade in figures are frightening. :(

Once again. Thank you

Check the small print on your insurance some policies should pay you what you paid if the car is written off in your first year of ownership.

Of course the settlements dept might not be aware of that clause (if it exists)

A receipt for the recent purchase should go a long way to inform an insurance company of the 'current market value'.

It's not like they can use the argument of 'asking price not being the sale price' when you've just paid said price.

Like others have said CAP and Glasses are just guides and although they usually pretty accurate on mainstream stuff such as say a ford focus or even a company hack 320D SE. They can be well out on a car that's full loaded or even something less mainstream such as Z4's.

Last Summer when I decided to take the plunge and buy a Z4 3.0 I watched loads go through both BCA and Manheim between May and July, I even kept on watching after I purchased mine in July out of curiosity right up to the end of September. I don't recall one going under CAP Clean even the ones graded 4. One car, an 03 3.0i SE with 30K but fairly low spec, no heated seats, nav etc. It CAPPED Clean at £4,600 but went through something ridiculous like £1,600 higher and the buyer would have fees to pay on that of maybe £100-150 trade. This made it basically full CAP retail money. I found it a week or so later on trader for £7,995. checked back a month or so later and it was gone.

The point is imagine you had a similar 30K car written off and pushed the insurance to offer CAP Retail (they usually low ball you first), without checking what they actually were selling for and you could easily be £1,500-2,000 out of pocket plus any excess you have.

Exactly, I do love a haggle too and I,m in no rush as laid up for a couple more weeks or so..

Cheers for all the info guys, Looks as though I have joined a nice friendly forum...
