Can't twist the low beem bulb holder for the life of me

E85 with halogen bulbs. Been trying for 30+ minutes now to screw in the fitting back in to the headlight with a new bulb, but I can't twist both clips in at the same time. I can't jack the car up and take the wheel off, but surely it should go in easier? Anyone got any tips?
 
I had real problems putting one of mine back in...the previous owner had somehow managed to mangle the holder....had to remove it completely and straighten it out..plus I think they only go back in one way (or maybe that was just mine after the mangling :) )
 
Aaaand of course, I spent the last 2 hours trying to change the full beam and not the broken low beam which wouldve taken 2 minutes. I'm off to buy beer :? 8)
