I have birthday and xmas money plus a £150 Comet voucher (holiday insurance payout) all adding up to £425 with the £30 cash back fron Canon all i need to find is £14.99.

What are thoughts on this as a starter DSLR and would it be suitable for taking motorsport pics ?

Cheers GAZ

Hi Gaza62,

It is a fine spec camara and the customer reviews all support that view. The only thing I would queston is the 3 X optic zoom. For sports pic I would prefer at least 8 X zoom because at most sporting events you could be some distance from the action. Having said that with 12.5 Megpics cropping and enlarging on a computer would for sure give super results.

Good luck and happy snapping

The 3x zoom also concerns me as i have 5x on my Ixus but could i not just change the lense to get around this i no nothing of SLR but thought you just bought a zoom lense for sport ?

Sorry - I don't understand the optical zoom here? This is a DSLR, not a single lens camera.

The zoom is defined by the lens only.

Typical rubbish Comet cut/paste of web detail form, nothing to do with that camera !

I ran a very long thread on buying a first DSLR camera and you'll see I came out with the Canon 450D. Read the thread end to end and you'll know all you ever need to know about the options of bodies, lenses, suppliers, etc. so I won' repeat it all here.

In the end the Canon did it for me on lens compatibility Vs Nikon, price and the image stabilizer on the lens, coupled with the many good reports.

If you go on Ebay and search you'll see the target price for a 450d is about £420 with free delivery and lots of goodies thrown in. They also do packages to swap lenses if you prefer. you'll also find cheaper if you buy the US 'Rebel XSi' badged version or Japanese 'Kiss', but I stuck with the UK badging.

Hey guys! I have this exact camera and can definately recommend it as a starter DSLR... Can't comment on the motorsport part but I really like the camera!

I bought a olympus e410 easy to use and verry light there is a used one on Ebay now for £190 buy it now and at that money a real bargain have a look at this reveiw http://www.ephotozine.com/article/Olympus-E410--small-and-light-DSLR-reviewed-5830 and the one for sale on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Olympus-e-410-kit-17-5-45mm-lens_W0QQitemZ140370120207QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CamerasPhoto_DigitalCameras_DigitalCameras_JN?hash=item20aeb60e0f

I started with a Canon 400D (superceded by the 450) and would definitely recommend the Canons as a starter. They have a fully automatic mode plus some preset choices to get you started. Then all you have to do is look at the settings the camera chose and then when you start using the manual modes you can remember the settings the camera chose for a given situation and you've got a good starting point.

I can now tell y'all that after 2 days of snapping everything that moves and that doesn't move and trying every stupid setting I can find this 450D is one awesome bit of kit.

Most amazing thing to a new to SLR is the IS lens that compensates for my amateur holding technique and the ability to take photos in very little light (compared to my old compact stuff) Both flatter the amateur.

With a 4gb chip it's got some 1500 photos capacity on full 12.x mp and the battery really does last well.

There's my amateur review after 2 days :D

Sadly no Z4 shots as it's way deep and cosy in the garage, filthy and needs some TLC

I recently bought a 500D, and there was a cashback offer available direct from Canon. All you had to do was buy it from one of the retailers supporting the offer, and then send your receipt away. Might be helpful if you can mix it with your other vouchers.

The camera is great, can't remember now what the difference was between the 450D & 500D but I've found it really good as a first D-SLR.

Thanks folks for you replies

Decided on the 450d http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/441422/CANON-EOS-450D-WITH-18-55MM as i have the Comet voucher for £150 plus my Birthday cash and Xmas cash then the code for 10% discount bringing the price down to £422 not got to find any money.

The £30 cashback offer i will look into not sure if Comet are involved.

Did look at the D500 but not gonna use the extra functions so the money i save can go towards a zoom lense.

Tried to click and collect today but out of stock but can have delivered for free so going to pop into Jessops tommorrow just to make sure the Camera feels OK in my hands then order.

Was having a play around with my brother inlaws Nikon D5000 yesterday so looking forward to getting my DSLR :D

Yep... the Canon and Nixon are both great pieces of kit! Canon man myself, 400D... love it!

You probably know this, but Comet have a 14 day price match / promise within 10 miles of the store, although £422 sounds good!

Hope they get you sorted soon... look forward to some shiny Zed pics

Sounds like a good price you have there.

I too was in a couple of Jessops getting the feel for cameras. They'll likely bench agains the Nikon D3000 and the Sony A330

For what it's worth the Sony is good value, but Jessops don't push it, The grip felt too small to me and they are fairly new to the market. The Nikon was my joint runner until I dscovered you're restricted to Nikon lenses (and some aftermarket) as the motorised function is in the body, while the Canon is compatible with everything.

which of you guys are the camera experts?

today i went to look at the Nikon D5000, looks a good camera but i also want 1 that i can take videos, is it any good at video?

can any 1 recomend a good combined camera/video

I have a NIKON D90 and that takes good vids. Up to 720p. I would think the D5000 would be similar on video quality.

Your starting to get into more serious money above the D90 though!

See here. The D5000 has many features of the D90: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond5000/
