Can someone in the Midlands help?.. Registering a new battery

Hi all,

For the life of me I can't find my switchable DCAN cable after the house move and think it's probably been thrown out.

I was wondering if there is anyone near the Solihull region who can help me register a new battery?

I've had a look at the list and there's only 1 member in Solihull, who I've messaged but he hasn't logged on since last year.

Thank you

I think any Halfords can do that for you. I certainly wouldn’t be concerned about fitting it without registering in the short term. (I wouldn’t even bother registering it at all but it’s a contentious issue)!

If you know someone with a soldering iron, buy a small spdt switch and wire it in yourself.

Hi guys, my new K+DCAN and finally arrived. Unfortunately I can't get my software communicating with the car. There has been no change other than the cable, which is identical to the previous one and the driver is correctly installed.

Pulling my hair out right now. I don't really fancy Halfords touching my car to be honest. Not sure what to do now..

It's not the best cable but probably more reliable than eBay and Amazon cables. It's probably a config issue on your machine.

Check the COM port allocated to the cable and make sure it matches the one INPA is using (usually 1).
Make sure the latency in the advanced options of the serial config are set to 1.

I can see in device manager that serial port is set to COM 5 (which I'm pretty sure is right) and latency timer is set to 1 msec.

Hmm..

Open C:\EDIABAS\BIN\EDIABAS.ini and look for the [OBD] section, the correct port number should be listed there.

So my local BMW indy saw me straight away and registered the battery. I can't believe he wouldn't take any money for it. Some genuinely nice people about! I'm sure those in the Solihull will know of Noel. Top bloke.

I'll have a look at the ini file when I get back. Currently sat in my car! :driving:

You're a legend! The com ports were different in Device Manager and the OBD section of the .ini file! I was able to verify that the battery registration was done correctly. Happy days.

I am unable to get ISTA P working though, I wonder if I'm missing something obvious? I try to create a new session but it's not able to create one. I wonder if you can work your magic again?!

ISTA-P requires a launcher which I assume you are already using, for use with a D-DCAN cable you also need to run an ICOM emulator, it usually forms part of the ISTA launcher.

ISTA-P can be dangerous though. By default it will want to program every module in the car which you should only attempt to do if you have a genuine BMW ICOM (£400 from the dealer) and a proper programming power supply (40amp minimum), not a battery charger like a CTEK.

The cable you have has a bug in the protocol conversion which means it only operates at half speed and will cause you to brick your transmission and iDrive if you try and flash either of those modules. If you had a Bimmergeeks D-CAN cable you would have faster data rates and can program any module. The cable will work fine for ISTA-D diagnostic though.

Hi, yes I was using an emulator, but I think I'll leave ISTA P well alone after your advice. I was hoping to activate the alarm beep when arming and disarming. I don't suppose ISTA D would be able to do that would it?

You would typically use NCS Expert for something like that.

As Nick said, NCExpert is the tool for that kind of change. You can also get a program called NCSDummy that unsurprisingly makes things a little simpler. It's a pretty straightforward task, if you search google about enabling the locking beep on an E90 then it'll be the same procedure on our Z4.

I just thought, Rob, that, like R.E92, I'd write something most people don't understand.

Sorry, I'll post something controversial about tyre pressures or a blog entry about my cars first aid kit to balance out the useful information here.
