Can I get USB audio, iPhone clip in or BMW iPhone Station?

Hi,

I have bluetooth in my Z4M and the phone holder in the fold down part in the centre. What can I add to this? Can I add the USB audio to this? I go to the check bluetooth compatibility on the BMW website and it asks which version I have. I don't know!

Also, can I add the iPhone 4 snap in kit so my iPhone 4S will physically fit in the centre and charge. I assume I won't be able to play music from the phone if it's plugged in? Is this just for phone?

Finally, has anyone seen the BMW Link iPhone app and BMW iPhone station? Do they do a kit for the Z4?

Thanks for any help.

Dan

Hello,

I'll try to answer a few of your questions,

You can get a cradle to fit in the drop down centre section. This will allow you you charge you phone, it will also boosts your phones reception. Depending on what eject box is currently fitted will depend on weather the larger iPhone cradle will fit. I modified mine to make it fit.

If your looking to add audio from your phone or iPod you should look at the intravee seeing as you have factory nav. It's very easy to install and you'll get all the info come up on the screen.

Adding to Jan's comments
my 07 definitely had the old eject box which would not accept the iPhone 3 and certainly not the iPhone4 cradle so very likely you will need the later wider eject box( original was designed prior to the wider "smart phones" ) or careful use of a dremel may fix it .Even the new eject box would not accept the iPhone4 cradle without the slight adjustment to it's formfactor buy shaving off the wings at the rear of the cradle

Probably cheaper to go the intravee path or equivalent

I see. That's rather annoying! There is t really anywhere else to keep the phone and have it charging.

By the way, I don't have sat nav in the car, just the business stereo

i fitted a parrot MK9200 because the business cd does not show any track id on mp3 cds

i think the parrot will connect to the iphone

There is another solution
The BMW iPod kit basically an intelligent "box" attaches to the Head unit in multi changer slot with a trailing Apple plug into glove box
I have one fitted .I installed a suitable Brodit holder on dash by heater control and plug in the Apple cable to my iP4 which charges and plays through H/U
allows me to have B/T calls music function and use iP4 as Sat Nav although the voice commands only play through H/U when set to the iPod function not radio

Bit Heath Robinson but does do the job
oh and the music has to be in playlists named BMW1-5 and effectively replaces the multi disk player if fitted

or Parrott or Intravee

Also makes the drop down arm superfluous , above is probably a cheaper solution than replacing the eject box and new cradle

i had 1 of these, it works very well but you does not show track info on the business radio/cd, thats why i fitted my parrot

Agree that is the downside

Thanks for all the replies so far.

I’ve just spoken to a dealer who explains the later stereos and Bluetooth systems found in the M models might be able to stream music over Bluetooth from the iPhone 4/4S with the latest software update. Not sure how to do that, but I’ll look into it tonight when I’m with the car, as this would be the easiest and cheapest option!

I’m interested in the Parrot. Looks like a good bit of kit. My only concern is buying a Bluetooth system, when I’ve already got Bluetooth in the car. It then wastes the steering wheel buttons etc. Although, I do agree, that the Bluetooth in the car isn’t great due to the tiny screen!

Perhaps then I’ll go for the BMW iPod kit. Use this with my iPod and keep my iPhone separate, connected to Bluetooth for calls. Is it easy enough to fit a charging socket in the centre flap? Is there a 12v supply around there I could use. I find the 12v socket next to the ashtray useless as there’s nowhere to put your phone!

Just in case anyone is wondering, the BMW iPhone Station doesn’t work with these cars. Just the new shape Z4’s as they have a different bus system.

Also, has anyone got any photos and/or comments on the Brodit iPhone 4 mount system? Not sure whether to go for the centre console or dash mounted one.

Dan, i will be interested in the bluetooth music streaming solution. Keep us up to date with regards to the software update required.

Cheers

this is a pic of the brodit holder, sorry i ain't got a pic of the parrot attached to it

i also fitted the kit that allows the steering wheel buttons to control the parrot, that was a wast of money

Can’t decide what to do! The thing is, I usually have the music on an iPod but I’d like my phone to connect to the Bluetooth system.

I’m thinking this…

Option 1. Install iPod kit (Intravee, Dice or BMW) which will charge and play music from the iPod. iPod can live in the glovebox or centre flap. iPhone can live in a Brodit mount on the dash, charging and connected via Bluetooth for phone.

Option 2. Install Parrot kit. Now, I assume this will accept music over Bluetooth? This would mean I could have either the phone connected by Bluetooth and keep it hidden away in the flap between the seats, or have the iPod connected by the cable. Is this correct? Can it have 2 devices connected at the same time? One by Bluetooth for phone and the iPod by wire for audio? This would mean just having the Parrot unit on display on the dash. I’ve been quoted £245 for this installed! Seems a bargain! He has said the steering wheel controls won’t work though. 

Thanks, it looks smart. Is it very secure and sturdy? I'll definitely go for one, just need to decide whether to get the iPhone 4S mount or the Parrot mount to go with it!

Is it viewable by passengers? My girlfriend usually selects the songs for me!

steady as a rock, a few people on here have used them and as far as i am aware, everybody is happy with them

Perfect place to keep the phone is with the passenger seat base extended forward half an inch and just slot it in sideways there. Never moves, same goes for wallet.

Just tried it, didn't work with my car. Phone works ok, but no music streaming.

Taz, why do you say the steering wheel controls adaptor is a waste of money?

because you don't seem to get that much control, definately have volume control but i'd have to check what else you can do, my car is at the garage at the moment so can't check it now

from memory, if i recall its because the MFSW only as a few buttons, i'm sure i can't change tracks and things

roughly what area are you? - er just checked on your profile - too far for you to come and have a look at mine

No worries, thanks for your help.

I think I'm going to go for the Dice Duo iPod kit. Looks like a nice tidy way of getting iPod onto the stereo. It also allows for steering wheel controls and displays song names on the stereo so looks like a good option. I'll install this with a Brodit bracket and either the Brodit pass through iPhone holder, or use the mount with the Dice G2 holder. I'd prefer the Brodit, but the Dice allows me to change the cradle to fit the iPod as well as the iPhone.
