Can I fit a wheelchair in the boot?

Hello all lucky Z4 owners

Due to a degenerative illness I am looking to exchange my manual MX5 for a E89 Z4 auto.

Does anyone have any experience with putting a 22" wheeled wheelchair in the boot?

I'm sure that it won't with the roof down, but what about up?

Many thanks
Sean

Where are you in the UK ? I'm sure someone nearby will let you try to see if it will fit, good luck

I'm sure there will be a E89 Zedder nearby, hope it all works out for you, all the best Steve

You should be able to find one that fits. We have one that collapses like a push chair and it would fit and you'd be able to get the roof down I'm sure. I'll see if I can get a picture tonight.

Hi Andyf1140,
Thank you, that would be brillant. :D
I can always get smaller wheels if need be but I tend to use 22" at the moment if I need the chair.

Hi,
I am in Plymouth but often pop through to Exeter & spend a sunday afternoon on the quay.
If you pm me your number I will let you know when I come over and we can give it a try.
I know when my mum had alzheimers I could not even get her walker in, but its worth a try.

I found that fitting one in the e89 was much harder than the e85. You'll certainly not get your roof down with it in the boot unless it's ridiculously small.

Sean - I live in Barnstaple and (weather permitting) will be coming to Exeter this Sunday for a flying lesson. If not this Sunday, then the next one with decent weather hopefully.

If Mark doesn't beat me to it, I'd be happy for us to try. Let me know.

There is a forum member, I think his forum name is spokes. He drives a coupe and manages to fit his chair ( in parts) on the passenger seat and foot well.

Sorry I missed the posts, been too busy to browse of late. Hopefully I will catch up with some one soon. PM me if anyone is passing through Crediton at some point.

Seems you can with the roof up! Yay!
Also, with a small adaptation to my chair, I should be able to fit it in with the roof down too, whoop!
Wheels will fit behind the seat, but that may not be required if I adapt the handles.
MASSIVE THANKS to ihadablackdog for popping over in his gorgeous Z4.
Means I seriously can get one now, roll on next year when I should have the funds.

That is great news Sean.

It's members like ihadablackdog that make this forum so great!

Enjoy the search once you have the funds.

Hey, no problem Sean, good to meet you and help out, the timing worked out well today.

Its good that it will fit with the roof up, but obviously that would be only half the fun.

As you say, if you can get some adjustments to the chair, then it should fit lovely.

Its the handle's that protrude to much, so a quick release mechanism for those would be ideal. Perhaps something that allows them to be adjusted up and down easily would allow them to pop off etc.

Talking of your chair, its really cool. Nice and light and the quick release wheels are nifty. They fit behind the seats quite nicely.

Didn't say at the time, but I think its the m-sport versions that have all the seat adjustments like mine (but others might correct me). Just something to bear in mind when looking at cars.

If you can get some sort of adjustment and would like to try again, let me know. That road from Crediton back to Barnstaple is quite a nice drive, shame about all the speed restrictions though...oh, and the terrible road surface closer to Barnstaple :x

Mr Tidy - it certainly is, always nice to help out and I've had offers of help myself, so what goes around etc...

Don't know if changing chairs an option for you, but my daughter's chair is a Kuschall Champion, the back and handles both fold down which makes it really compact. I've never tried it in my car with the roof down, but I can give it a go and take some pics if you want?

Nice to hear that the forum can help eachother out...

All us Devon owners (or nearby such as Smartbear) should get together at some point.. is anyone up for a meet somewhere central? :D

Hi, I’m up for a meet-up before the winter kicks in
Rob

Cool, there's pheonixboy, ihadablackdawg, mcbutler, and various others that I know of... including some from cornwall if we can get interest from that far away. I'll message them..

I'm away a lot of September but I can currently do any date in October for a sunday morning meet?

Probably best to start a new thread if we get some responses to this.

I'm a Rob too!

I have significantly shortened the handles using bits off an old chair I had for spares. I just need to tidy them up and make them look pretty, maybe put the nicer grips on them and then once they are done, try again and see if I can get the chair in.
I have cut them as low as I can bearing in mind that there are straps across the back that cannot be removed and I don't want to mess about with it too much otherwise it won't look factory.
I'll run some solder down them and hopefully that will be strong enough to hold it without the need for the bolt. The silver mark on the shorter handle is how far into the black tube, the silver tube goes, about 6cm.
