Can I Bose my exhaust?

Ok, boring driver alert!

I used to have a 2003 2.5s and it sounded just fine to me (I was 26 and had it for 4 years), I've had my 2007 3.0Si Sport for 6 months now (and I'm 39) and most of the time I'm on my own with the music cranked up - but having given a colleague a lift this week, I've realised how 'droney' the exhaust really is, especially in 6th just cruising - when you want a little more and you touch the accelerator.....droooone!

When I've noticed it in the past I've just put my Bose sound cancelling headphones on and it's bliss! I have to do long journeys back from the airport, so the headphones are always to hand - but it's probably not the safest.

Are there any options for a boring person like me? Personally you could electrify the car and I'd be happy as long as it still had some go in it!
I've searched in the forum, but can't see much beyond people making their cars louder! :)
Is there a chance that a previous owner could've done something - what should I be looking for to check?

Any thoughts? (don't say buy another car!)

is it really the exhaust? not induction noise?

check the foam from sound generator, jack the car up and see if all of exhaust is in there.. if everything is standard then you're looking at sound insulation probably which will take some effort.

When I read about the sound generator mod, I was very excited and ran out in the hope it had been done!
No such luck.

Buy some dynamat and pull the seats and carpet and line it underneath and put it all back in. Will make a much quieter drive.

Does the car still have all the cats? The rears can be lopped off without issue and will raise the db a fair bit.

TBH, I'm not 100% sure what I'd be looking for to see whether it's not OEM. (unless it's really obvious) Will have a look for an image of the full OEM exhaust.

The Si only has cats at the engine, it doesn't have the secondary cats the M54 has. It has a pair of small silencers in the same place.

Fair enough then. Dynamat will still solve the drone issue. Literally just lay it on the floors and put the carpet over the top.
I guess another question is where the drone is coming from. Is it from the bulk head or it is booming from the boot.
Also s**t tyres can affect noise by a huge margin. Anything that is a C grade or lower isn't great.

I admittedly have a coupe, so might be a little biased, but I find the engine to be very quiet in standard trim. As above, check exactly where the noise is coming from - there's a chance you might have a blow in the exhaust or something along those lines.

Dynamat will work. You could probably weld extra silencers in in-line if you wanted to...

The drone is definitely coming from behind, picks up the instant I touch the pedal - doesn't have to be a decent push either.
Definitely not the tyres, have got two sets of wheels, RFT and non, both different brands - same noise.

You could remove the sound generator altogether. Blocking the hole?
Also as above, add sound insulation under the carpets especially in the boot
Then thin tyres/wheels to minimise tyre noise if that's bothering you

Hmm - don't suppose there's an actual thing to block that off, so you'd need to fashion something for both ends, right?

I suppose it's enitely possible to have had the back boxes gutted out. Would provide a lot more bass in your life. Could you check if there are any signs of cutting and welding on them?

There is a blanking grommet that goes in the hole. I'll try find part number. To be fair though if you put your sound gen up for sale on here some folk will bite your hand off and send you their grommet in return (along with cash obv)
