Can CD Player play mp3s?

I have a 2007 Z4 with 6 CD changer and was just wondering if anyone has managed to play CDs with MP3s. I've read you can but I just tried playing a disc I burnt with Nero in UDF format and it doesn't seem to be able to pick it up. Are there any specific settings I need to use when burning?

You don't need to burn in a specific format. Just burn the CD as a 'data CD" and it will work. Your CD player will definitely play MP3s.
 
I can vouch for what IK says - almost every CD in my 6 CD Changer is an MP3 data CD, works just fine. Also means I have around 700 songs in there, navigating through them's a bit of a nightmare!
 
Yes should be fine, but does need to be in mp3 format, not any other format falling under the generic mp3 term.
 
Thanks for the response. Looks like good news just need to work out how to do it! Can I ask which program you used to burn the mp3s?

you should be fine to use nero. when the menu comes up, just chooce make a data cd, not make an audio cd.

then you just drag and drop songs onto your cd and press burn. should work fine.

Alternatively if you use windows 7, you don't need any programs, you can simply make the cd using windows explorer
 
I just use iTunes - when you choose burn it gives you the option of either Audio or Data CD.
 
I use either Roxio or just burn from a Windows Media Player playlist when I create data discs to listen to in the Z4. Have the occasional problem with tracks skipping but that's more to do with the burn speed and/or crap quality discs I think.

Are you guys talking about the actual headunit or the autochanger playing MP3 discs? I've got a newer (post-facelift) headunit in my pre-facelift Z4 with the original 6-disc changer and my changer most certainly doesn't play data discs. Just curious.

The OP's changer should be OK, my old Z4 was made Aug 06 and the changer worked with MP3's haven't tried the changer in the ///M though.

Both the head-unit AND changer play MP3s in my zed. Don't know which head-unit /changer I have but they're both factory fitted - that's on an 07 plate.

Not an effin chance, I've seen what's involved in changing the multi-changer and not a bloody hope I'd even consider that :o
 
Just to update: managed to create an MP3 CD in iTunes, worked like a charm in the Z4. Thanks again. Now trying to work out a way to scroll through a list of 100s of songs...!

from memory not a lot you can do other than keep pressing skip, but it's 4 years since I last tried an MP3 CD so could be wrong.
 
I know when I have burnt MP3 discs in the past it is handy if you keep them in the folders and burn it as a data disc. You can then scroll through the folders individually as if they are albums. I haven't used iTunes much for burning but I suspect this maybe the issue?
 
Not sure if thgis applies for the autochanger, but with the headunit you can skip through folders (assuming your recorded things into folders) but pressing the "M" button followed by the left/right arrow:
