Can Anyone Make Sense Of This?

Hi Guys

I'm just getting some insurance quotes for my Zed which I'm hoping to buy soon, and keeping everything else exactly the same, these were the quotes I got from confused.com

BMW Z4 SI SPORT CONVERTIBLE 2006-2009 2497cc CONVERTIBLE Manual Petrol £1192 Admiral
BMW Z4 SPORT CONVERTIBLE 2006-2009 2497cc CONVERTIBLE Manual Petrol £1192 Admiral
BMW Z4 SE CONVERTIBLE 2006-2009 2497cc CONVERTIBLE Manual Petrol £1192 Admiral
BMW Z4 SPORT CONVERTIBLE 2006-2009 1995cc CONVERTIBLE Manual Petrol £985 Admiral
BMW Z4 SI SE CONVERTIBLE 2006-2009 2497cc CONVERTIBLE Manual Petrol £900 Admiral
BMW Z4 SE CONVERTIBLE 2003-2009 2494cc CONVERTIBLE Manual Petrol £900 Admiral
BMW Z4 CONVERTIBLE 2003-2005 2171cc CONVERTIBLE Manual Petrol £891 Admiral
BMW Z4 SE CONVERTIBLE 2005-2009 1995cc CONVERTIBLE Manual Petrol £873 Admiral
BMW Z4 CONVERTIBLE 2005-2009 1995cc CONVERTIBLE Manual Petrol £873 Admiral
BMW Z4 SE CONVERTIBLE 2003-2005 2171cc CONVERTIBLE Manual Petrol £865 Admiral

Can anyone make sense of why, in some instances a 2.5l engine is cheaper than a 2.0? Based on the above, I've now got my eye on the BMW Z4 SI SE CONVERTIBLE 2006-2009 2497cc for £900, with the facelift, and improved engine power of the si (correct me if I got any of that wrong)

Thanks

Pete

Because Admiral have paid out more for some types of car in claims than others, and in your specific example Admiral have paid out more to policy holders of the 2.0 than they have for the 2.5. Insurance grouping, value etc have little to do with insurance cost once they is a clear risk profile for each car in the database, it's as simple as that really.

^ This. I've found Admiral rely on their own data a lot more than most other insurers. So the Z4 is cheaper compared to other cars in the same 'insurance group' when shopping with Admiral. Conversely the S2000 is higher with all insurers because of the earlier models snap oversteering leaving people throughout the country looking out onto the road with the rear embedded in a tree, wondering what just happened.

I find tht with all bmws the sport models cost me on average 400quid more to insure than the se models. They wont insure me on a 530d msport but they will a 530d se.

Also I find Bell to be around 100quid cheaper than admiral and its the same company so worth looking there. If you do look at bell heres a few tips that saved me around 1k;

Add 2 named drivers who dont have points or crashes (800quid)
Keeping car on street instead of in garage (200quid)
Play with your job title and the named drivers job titles (50quid)

you save money by saying on street instead of in garage that has to be wrong!

No, it's the same for me - although it's only a £50 saving in my case.

utterly absurd, or do you think that statistics show that people that care about their car enough to garage it claim more for parking scrapes and other bits that road parkers dont?

So people without garages don't care about their cars? :?

To answer the question though, there are an infinite number of variables when it comes to insuring a risk, and insurance companies have to draw a line somewhere to make calculations.....their data obviously shows they've paid out for more garage cars I guess. Or their is a fault with their calculator, one or the other

Maybe a good way of them making a extra bit of cash? Most people automaticly think having a garage saves money on insurance without testing the alternatives.

Insurance companies wont touch me in anything over a 2.5se convertible but will let me insure a 3.0si coupe for less. It's a total maze of complications.

Nargh - people who garage their cars do more damage getting them in and out (door chips, knocking the bumper off, corner scrapes, doors hitting the car, etc., than those who leave them on the street or drive.....

I was told the reason for the garage thing was that if a thief is inside the garage working on the car its far less likely he will be seen than if he is working out on the street. This was in relation to an Escort Cosworth with a very complex alarm system however I guess if someone wants to steal your car and knows what they are doing they can pretty much do it with enough time.

Ive now found that the cheapest for me is off street parking in a gated compound with key access. It also has CCTV but I doubt thats much deterrent nowadays.

Putting words in my mouth much?

Just because people who garage their cars generally care more about them than the majority doesn't mean jack all to the individual such as yourself who does.

I thought this was implied as we talking from an insurance stand point of accessing risk.

Also note the question mark at the end of my sentence, I was just posing a theory, not stating fact.

I also dont have a garage for my car at the moment, I wish I did though.

(also I think jeeps is right :D)
