Hi everyone,

Had a bit of a mishap earlier today which landed me on a grass verge. The car is absolutely fine but the undertray took a beating. When i got home, i noticed this part hanging down just behind the left side of the front bumper. Does anyone know what it is? It has a cable running to the back of it as you can see in the attached images. Rear I have zip-tied it up and out of the way for the time being, but would like to know what its for and where it goes if anyone knows.

On a side note, does anyone know the part number for the front undertray? No worries if not as I’m sure i can find it.

Sorry, the photos aren’t great.

Thanks in advance,
Philip.

Looks like the external temperature sensor. The splash guard you have damaged is a rare part to find. Good luck

Ah thank you very much!
I’m thinking I’ll try my luck with breaker cars on FB and eBay to find the part.
Do you know whereabouts it should mount? I assume somewhere behind the front bumper?

If you look under the front just in front of the wheels you will see the triangular shape of the panel. The cone shape you showed is part of that and the sensor fits inside it. So it looks as though the panel is destroyed. Check the temperature displayed on the instrument panel. If it still reads correctly then you only need the panel to fit it into. Put a wanted ad on the forum and you may get lucky

Here it is, item number 6. It is a stressed part which often cracks, even if the car hasn’t been mistreated, so very hard to find a second hand one in good condition. Still available from BMW £191.

That’s perfect, thank you. Adding that to my list of bits. Who knew assorted plastic bits would be worth their weight in gold haha

What they are worth and what Messrs BMW charge for them are not related in the slightest.

Could be worse, though. Messrs Porsche charge £456 to paint a model designation badge black!
