Can a scratch be removed without repaint

Just to echo what others have said, it's amazing what can be polished out, even by hand.
A few years ago an electric gate closed as I was driving through, scraping down the side of my A6 leaving some lovely deep scratches, multiple bodyshops said it needed a respray on at least the rear door:
I decided to have a try polishing it, worst case being I have it resprayed anyway. Here's what I managed to do using just T-Cut scratch remover, wax/polish and a fair bit of elbow grease:
