This weekend I helped a friend with the motor for his race car to reassembled the top end.
BMW uses hallow cams and that combined with the very hard steel and the sequence of the cams require a special tool to install the cam. Not using the tool will cause the cams to crack. The tool bolts onto the spark plugs holes and pushes down on the journal caps to even out the pressure.
We also tested the VANOS to make sure it was working properly. This is a single VANOS motor: the double VANOS M54 of the earlier Z4 has the same mechanism on both intake and exhaust. The N52 is the same concept, just different design...
