Looking to upgrade my DSLR probably tomorrow as an Xmas pressie fromSWMBO.

I've currently got a canon 400d with standard and additional USM lens. I don't use it loads but mainly for car and walking shots.

I've been looking at the 700d at about £420 which seems to have some significant improvements over mine and was very tempted to buy one today but spotted the 750d (newer model?) for About £70 more.

I know there are lots of camera experts on here so I'd welcome opinions

I want to stick with canon as I have the extra lens and like the user interface.

I'm clueless on cameras but i recently asked the forum on behalf of my daughter who prompted her to purchase the 700d from "digitalrev" for £350 brand new delivered
She's well happy with the camera & the saving :thumbsup:

Digitalrev sources from Hong Kong. I just bought the canon 1.4x from there as the prices are excellent. Delivery pretty quick as well, idea how they get away with the value they put on the box form customers though.
 
I would say that if you do not use the camera as often as you hope, the buying the latest model would be a waste of money.

I would suggest you treat yourself to a nice lens or maybe software ie Photoshop Elements latest edition.

Just my thoughts.
 
I have elements and the telephoto USM lens is ideal fir my needs. Think I'll still with the 700. Thanks for pointing me to digitalrev.
 
For the extra money you get an extra 6Mpixels in the 750D, although, unless you're going to print out at larger sizes (>A4) you'll not see the benefit. The 750D is about 30g less - ok, about 1oz less. Not much different, but, every little helps if you're carrying a camera for hours.
ISO - the 700D edges it with 12800 v 6400. Might be helpful if your really pushed indoors.
Wexphotographic has the 700D at £339 and the 750D at £429 both after £50 cash back.
For what you're likely to use it for I'd agree with the 700D.
 
I used to have a 550d and went up the canon pecking order to a (bigger) 70d

If you are not bothered about size for an extra £100 gets you a vastly superior camera than both the 700 and 750d and you get to use the same lens.

I agree step up to a bigger bodied camera I jumped from a 450D to a 7d a few years back was a good move a superior camera and the bigger body makes the camera a lot easier the hold onto less camera shake which means better IQ and no hand cramps

I sold my Canon EOS 450D with 18-55 and 55-250 IS lenses and upgraded to a very good condition 7D.

I could have easly bought a new one but the 7D is a near professional camera and unparalleled except for the new 7D Mark II which is nearly 2K with lenses.

The 70D although having a newer processor is still not as pro aas the 7D.

Heed my advice and treat yourself to used 7D and some good lenses. You wont look back.
 
6D is also a good, but pricier option. It's full frame sensor is wonderful. It's a trade off between that and the crop sensor 7DII, so you'd want to compare features like max frame rate, ISO levels etc. I moved from 7D to 6D & have been v.happy.

That said, the 400D is still a very capable camera and you're not going to improve your images much by upgrading the body - they'll just be bigger and take up more room on the HD. The weak link in your current system is actually the lenses - you don't say what they are, but standard or "kit" lenses are notoriously shite. Better to upgrade that if poss.

I bought the 5D MKIII and enjoy learning about the unit as it has soooooo many more features than my old 20D had.
 
PVR, your lens is perfect but the camera autofocus is a little slow hence the reason for upgrading the body.

I tend to crop my images so the extra pixels will be useful, not massively but usually to get rid of something in the frame by accident. I never print on paper anymore and don't expect to in the future.

700D ordered from digital rev for £328

now what to do with the 400?, sell or keep as a spare???

PS may take things up more seriously when I retire in a few years then a much better system will be in order I think
 
Well it arrived today and after a quick play I'm very pleased.

Chunkier and with lots more features it feels great but the biggest improvement is speed. It's much quicker at working out focus and exposure settings. Just as I wanted

Well done on your purchase, very exciting getting a new bit of kit.

What about keeping the old body and buying a telescope to marry it up to? The sky at night photos rather than your neighbour 5 miles away kind of stuff mind.
