tbh the best thing ive got is my satio which has a 12mp camera, but the phots come out rubbissshhh
not sure why, probs cos im inept but still

so was thinkin...if i got into it wheres the best place to start camera wise
ideally i want a camera i can use for a night out so its kinda small, like a regular digital camera, while being able to take some awesome pics when im in the mood

so yehh anyone got any wise knoledge :)

If you don't want bulk of an SLR, why not go for one of the Pansonic Lumix compacts, one of the dearer ones which has lots of functions. I had one a while ago and took some really nice pics with it. You will probably get a stonking deal on Amazon in new year with post xmas sales etc.

What about a bridge camera (compact, but with some of the control you can get with a SLR). My friend has a Canon Powershot G12 and has taken some fantastic photos with it. To be fair, the most important aspect is the person taking the photos - I've seen some amazing photos taken with a 2MP iPhone camera.

Woots, take a basic photography course at the local college or wherever but it will make a huge difference. Buying an expensive camera without knowing how to run it is like having an M Coupe with a Learners plate.

I have the canon ixus 130 for my party camera - very small.. face recognition even in dark rooms and its hd movie func takes decent vids in clubs without the bass distorting the sound.

My SLR ( Canon 550D) only gets used maybe 3 or 4 times a year.. for weddings and holidays.. not something i like to use for parties as such as its too big and cumbersome... and certainly not in a bar or club.. otherwise people will mistake you for those anoying people who ask you if you want to buy a picture :x

Used to use a finepix Z from fujifilm but I bought a Panasonic lumix FZ245 recently and its brilliant. Has a multitude of functions and offers picture quality of slr's for reasonable ££s. Im still messing round with it but have taken some crackers with it so far. Ive got a traditional pentax slr unit that im adamant I will use and get the hang of next year then I may well get a dslr but as I wasnt up on all this photography mallrky I opted for going to an independant camaera shop which helped me make my decision. Bridge cameras are great imo.

As said above i would stick with a P+S for nights out and get a DSLR for the hobbie side of things thats what i do i still have my Ixus 970is for a pocket camera then my 450D for my motorsport pics.

I have a Nikon D90 and a Sony NEX 5. Both great cameras. Try the Sony. Good compromise between point and shoot and DSLR.

I also have the Canon Ixus 130 and it's a fantastic camera. Cannot recommend it enough. Small and light but takes great photos. It lives in my handbag all the time incase of photo opportunities. It mainly gets used for nights out and stuff in even my smallest clutch bag. But it can also do this:

Hey woots,u are still alive, lol. havnt seen a post from u on here in ages(or have i just not noticed them).
How is the infamous blueflash 2.0 doing/still whipping the ass off some m's,no doubt :D

As for the camera,i would agree with others, about taking a basic photography course,as one of my mates did once, and can get better/more detailed photos than me(with an identical camera)!

+1  As well as my D90 I have a fantastic Panasonic Lumix FX-550. Paid about £300 for one two years ago but they're on Simply Electronics for £134 with free delivery.

Amazing camera. Touch screen, full manual control, great wide/zoom lens. Best compact I've owned and can hold it's own against cheaper DSLR's IMO. Even better than my GF's TZ10 which I bought her for Xmas.

Check out my DrumCamp Flickr pics for examples of both night and day shots taken on it...(link below).

Me too!....

Although great pictures! :)

I've got a Nikon D80 with a 18-135 lens, it's a great camera but far too big nights out, or most occasions to be honest, really want a wide angle lens for it.
Got a Lumix for Christmas, it's a great camera, as others say, at the pricey end of the scale for a compact but takes great pictures...
