I'm looking to upgrade from my trusty Nikon D70s as despite the glass being the most important thing, six minglepixies no longer hacks it.

My budget is around 600-700 and I have been eyeing the latest Nikons but to be honest, I've been stuck to them since 1980 when I bought my first FE, which I still have, but I'm thinking its time to change.

I read a review recently of the new Canon 600D but it was evident that it was more of a refresh than a genuine 'order of magnitude' improvement. Which got me looking at the 550D which a few on here seem to admire. It has most of the 600D features but the same 18 minglepixie resolution, and is down to £550 at Tesco and a couple of other online stores.

I don't need video - but they all seem to have it now - and I do a mix of landscape and close-up photography.

Would I be doing the right thing?

With all of the focus usually on Canon and Nikon, how about Pentax?

The K series ranges from £350 to £800. I had a play with the Kr model over the weekend (mid range £500). Very impressed with picture quality (amazing depth, clarity and colour) build quality and controls. There is the added bonus of retro fitting older Pentax lenses too.

Jessops have the full range available.

Body is one thing, it is the lenses that are expensive. Do you have good lenses now as that would persuade me to keep looking at the Nikon range.

My camera body was £600-ish from memory, it was the lenses that brought it to about 3k.

The 550D is a brilliant piece of kit, but as PVR says if you have decent Nikon lenses I wouldn't switch my alliance unless over time you are willing to spend out on new lenses too

If I were looking for a new camera and did not have thousands invested in Nikon lenses I would give serious consideration to Pentax as well. I really don't think you can go wrong with Canon, Nikon or Pentax as each have there advantages... :camera:

You already have Nikon lenses, stick with Nikon. As you already know, it's the lenses that are the most important part of photography... 600-700 is not going to cut it for an 18MP camera + new lenses. But will be sufficient for a Nikon D5100 would be right in your budget and a really good mid-range DSLR. (it slots between the D3100 and D7000)

Well I've bitten the bullet and ordered a new D5100 so looking forward to delivery now. I'll let you know how it goes - i'll be sad to see the D70S go, its been a great camera, but mega pixies are mega pixies...... :D
