Any of you camera / photo bods got experience of getting a lens repaired.

My Nikon 18-200 is bust! Something inside has gone and the zoom does not work correctly, camera will not auto focus either. The glass is all intact but I can hear a rattle.

Got accidental damage on the house insurance not checked out the xs yet though. Not sure what to do for the best, lost without it as its my only lens.

I use Canon when I need my lenses repaired. I'd recommend trying Nikon for a quote. I was pleasantly surprised by Canon's pricing so hopefully you'll find the same with Nikon.

Also these have been recommended by a Photo Journalist before

[edit] I think TomScott is a pro photographer shooting Nikon. Might be worth picking his brains too.

Fixation looks a pretty good start. I've had the lens for several years and paid around £350 when the rate against dollar was really good. It's still around £600 now so must be worth repairing.

Lenses are tricky things. The 18-200mm although expensive is not worth the earth if it were a £1000+ lens it might be worth repairing. Sounds like the motor has gone, or one of the contacts has broken.

Would just claim on the insurance, having it diagnosed may cost a fair amount. I dropped on of mine it started giving an error 99 which is basically its nakard. (IS had broken) youl find that repairing it will be more than 50% the lens is worth, parts labour diagnosis. In my case the IS was a part of the motor replacing it on its own basically meant taking it all apart. Obviously when you take a lens apart it looses all its calibration and what might have been a sharp lens to start with may end up back focusing or blurry. I claimed xs was £100 the lens was worth £500 was worth it for me. Had a new lens within a week.
