Camera help!

After looking at peoples pictures on here, I'm sure there are a few knowledgable folk. I'm looking at buying a new camera soon, but I'm unsure as to what I really want/need.
I wanted a DSLR to get some good quality pictures of my car (one of the main uses), but I'm now off to New York in December (YAY!) so I'm thinking that I should maybe get a compact one which will be much easier for shooting city pics. I've had a look at the specs of the compact ones and they seem to be good, but I dunno whether i'll get the really fine, colourful pics I'm after?
The other thing is price, I think a high spec compact will be about 250 quid, whereas the cheapest DSLR's start from about 300 quid, dunno whether it is worth it.
I almost completely use my camera for car pics and holiday type pics (scenery, cityscapes etc.), but I like to get loads of fairly quick pics, not one for standing and playing with settings for ages (impatient!).

Advice/Help would be much appreciated. Ta.

I'm not a camera geek but I have a Panasonic Lumix TS7 and love it.. 12x optical zoom is excellent for a compact camera and the pictures are excellent quality. Looked at their 3/4 DSLR (G1) but has no movie mode (mine does HD video, great for trackdays) so haven't bought one.

Sony A200 is available at 280 quid. That's what I have - pics are available in the meet thread.

Or there's this for 278 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Olympus-E-420-D-SLR-Camera-10MP/dp/B0015IMFY0/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1251108168&sr=8-11

Both much better than a standard compact.

Andy, can you bluetooth pix & vid's with the lumix? :?

nope.. that would annoy me tho i think as the filesizes are pretty mega for bt.

im used to just whipping out the memory stick these days and grabbing the files.

bought second hand with the aero side skirts also fitted above, for £500

Now go back to topic! Gonna have a thread about mine when I've finished messing with it 8)

I went on a trip to England, Wales, and Ireland a couple months ago, and did a lot of camera research before the trip. Like you, I wanted a DSLR, but didn't want to lug it around everywhere for a couple weeks. I settled on the Panasonic Lumix ZS3 (referred to as TZ7 in Europe). It's a great little camera. Small enough to fit in my pocket, but it is feature packed. It has a big 3" LCD screen, solid construction, and a 12x optical zoom. It also takes HD video with stereo sound. I bought it for $350 when it first was released in April, and I'm sure you can get it for less than that now.

yep, same one as i'm recommending then. Cracking camera indeed.

Having said that, you can get a DSLR for the same money, so it's a tough choice. The HD video swung it for me.
