Calling at Z4C (AUTO) drivers

add me in

It's a great Autobox makes it a more fun car to drive IMO.. hence why I bought it.

The whole argument of manual over auto, then stick it into manual and use paddles... end of

I found something out this weekend that I wasn't aware of.. leaving it in Drive and using the paddle shift is different to putting it into the manual shifter mode and using the paddles... i didn't realise that the gear actually PERSISTS when the gear shifter is moved left into manual! I used the paddleshift as a manual until the weekend.... So its actually very possible to average nearly 40mpg in the auto when you're crusing on the motorway and driving relatively sensibly. I averaged 53mpg for about 5 miles with little change to drivign behaviour and speed (65mph) in gear 6 before i hit traffic. was :D to see the number though. real mpg in the manual mode when taking it easy is about 37 for me.. because it doens't drop down to lower gears unless it really needs to. whereas auto drops down gears at anything below 2krpm..

Ummm thats really interesting i don't really drive my auto in manual mode as a lot of my driving is inner city traffic.

Obviously need a 3.0l straight six for stop-start cos i love the change in pace will you feel the need (difficult sell to others funnily enough)

What happens when the revs drop in manual? is it still a smooth gear change? is there any risk to the clutch/engine/gearbox? will it stutter? stall?

Might have to have a little play....

Just bought an 08 coupe si SE in black and auto ... previously had auto on Jaguar Sovereign and now have a Jeep Grand Cherokee auto ... wouldn't have anything else. The Z4 is now the mem sahib's new shopping car ... she hasn't driven autos before and has taken to it like a duck etc ... now loves it after just a week ... that was lucky!

I think you'll find you've actually bought a sport not an SE
Umm ... that's what the blurb called it ... I'm happy either way ... I haven't had the log book back yet ... what has an SE got that the sport hasn't and vice versa? Just had a look on Autotrader and can't see the spec differences between SE and Sport ... it was advertised as an SE ... should I be happier if it's a Sport? :D

Also, If in full auto and you start using paddles if you knock the gear lever over, it puts it into Sport (Rather than pressing sport button), then knock the gear lever back and goes back into full auto.......

Well I've got no idea now! It's got memory seats, an M steering wheel and all the gear change options ... no idea if it's got sports suspension or not - I haven't driven an example of each - it's pretty harsh but I've assumed that was the run flats! Also got 18" 108s.
Is there some definite way of telling? ... interior trim, dashboard (mine's shiny ally looking stuff) or anything? It seems to have all the gadgets except electric folding mirrors which seems odd given all the fancy stuff it HAS got. I didn't have any luck folding the mirrors in manually but have since seen a pic of some pointing upwards so will try that when 'er indoors gets back! ...
Anyway, if there IS a way of telling I'd like to know because it's insured as an SE at the moment so will have to tell the thieving buggers if it's a Sport!

M steering wheel is def a sport option as are the 108s but both can be added onto an SE.

Stick your VIN in here:

And all shall be revealed

Just check mine, and I have the sports seats and sports suspension :D I was never quite sure

Debating whether to get an auto over a manual so the Mrs can drive it as well. Anyone got any input or unbiased views on a auto over a manual??? More importantly on the mpg wise is there really that little in difference between the two?

For me I have always had manuals and I test drove both (Same day) and researched both (worried regarding auto box issues).

For me both were great cars, BUT the Auto won the day, so much more smoother, quicker through the gears and I could find many (if any) issues reported online.

In sport, with the foot plated, red lines (or nearly) before the gear change, I couldn't change a manual quicker. If I want to drive in manual I can so best of both worlds, paddle shift or use the gear selector.

As for MPG cruise control, long trip door to door I can get 40 mpg, not sure what the manuals get, but its better the my old 1.8T Manual TT.

Thats great thankyou. I love driving my mrs auto compared to my manual although i feel you have to use your brakes more to slow it down. Whats the tax on the autos? I know the manuals are £245.

Think it's the same, I know mine is in the region of 250 - 260 ish

To any potential buyer considering a Z4c auto their only concern should be "is it practical for me having 2 seats ?" the rest of the car after my own 10 months experience is pretty hard to fault ,
servicing is on a par with a focus at most indy garages
any repairs if required are more than affordable considering the performance available
the fuel economy is again more than acceptable given the performance capabilities
the ease of drive in town or country in auto is near faultless
the depreciation is minimal in comparison to its rival's (TT/SLK/Cayman )
then factor in the contours that i never tire of washing, waxing or just looking at ( or the view from the wing mirrors :) )
just an all round top motor that i wish i could keep forever
