Calling all Z4 audio upgrader :D advice needed

Hi All,

Just got my Z4 Coupé a couple of weeks ago and I love the car (installed cruise control this weekend as well, definitely needed for a 34mile each way commute to work lol). The only thing that I think is lacking really is the sound system. I currently have the 6 speaker system and would like to upgrade and while I know the main parts, like amp, sub, mids, tweeters etc, I have no idea how to get the signal from the head unit (prof sat nav) to an amp!

If I made an adaptor plate, would an 8/10" subwoofer fit in the well behind the seats?

I'd like to produce a shopping list for audio parts using this thread if possible. So, could all you lovely audio guru types please help me out :)!

Cheers,

Phill

P.S. the loud pedal still makes me  . It's nice to actually have some torque vs my old car (clio 197).

Hi Phil

The advise that I was kindly given was to use the Google search at the top of the page. A great starting point is th3odor3's (may have spelt that wrong) excellent illustrated thread - search for "picture heavy". There's another one where someone fitted subs in the rear cubby holes that's worth looking for (I think that you might want to search for "ICE" but can't remember).

If you're still stuck post back!

Hi Mate, welcome to the forum.

Nice choice of car, don't let the flop top boys convince you that you got the wrong car 8).

As for the upgrade, I would suggest you start by deciding on your budget and what you want your end goal to be or you'll end up like me, forever seeking the ultimate sound system.
As for the subs, you wont be able to fit anything bigger than 6 1/2 in there, there's just no room for anything bigger.
It's a question that has come up multiple times and probably needs a thread in the how 2 section to cover it.

With a coupe you have loads of space for a subwoofer in the boot. I'd start by looking at possible 4 channel amps with high level inputs, from this you can run a subwoofer or two and some decent 2 or 3 way components up front. I wouldnt bother wasting the time or money upgrading the 4" rears.

Hi all,

Many thanks for the links and the warm welcome :D. I've actually saved for about 2 years to be able to have the spare cash for my coupé (didn't fancy taking out a loan) and certainly, for me, the coupé was the only one to have! :driving:

Regarding your thread th30d0r3, I'm still not quite clear how the audio is taken from the headunit to the amp . I assume the SOT lead spliced into the RCA convertors does the trick? This covers front/back/left/right? Do you have a pin out diagram?

The JL cleansweep seems quite interesting although very expensive.

I don't have a specific budget (will be doing it over a few months, so spare cash) but my overall goal is to first upgrade with an amp and do the footwells, doors, tweeters with the 3-way crossover hertz speakers mentioned in th30d0r3's thread.

So far then:

- SOT harness to and splice some RCA convertors
- RCA leads to amp
- 4 channel Amp
- 2 amp channels to 2 off 3-way crossovers for right and left components.

th30d0r3,

How punchy are your 6.5" subs? I listen to a lot of metal, so like the old double bass drumming etc.

Many thanks for everyone's help :D

Phill
