Hi all-ive been asked a couple of times now by workmates "is your car a diesel?" -because it sounds throaty on start up,but im getting worried now because throaty is too close to the word rough,is it just mine?(it was in the stealers at weekend surely they would have picked up on anything amiss)-thanks (2006 with 34000)

I'd check for a cracked exhaust manifold, mine went and its meant to be quite common on the 4 pot. It should sound silky smooth and only really throaty when you give it some beans.

It was easy to hear, i couldnt spot it even when it was on ramps as it went at the head side. I just took it to BMW who fixed it under warranty. I hope yours isnt the manifold as it isnt cheap.

sorry to rub salt in the wound but we have another silky smooth starter.........i think yours is broken :sos:

Dont stress too much - a cracked manifold "should" be pretty rare. Engine should be smooth, it could simply be a fowled plug, dodgy coil all sorts of "cheaper" things. Do you notice any hesitation when accelerating ? Is tick over uniform ?

Manifold Cracks *usually* make a tick tick tick tick noise when cold, eventually disappearing when warm.
