Calling 2ltr owners,advice needed please.

had a 2.0 for nearly six years and loved it. Got the car first for the rag top roadster choice. the extra couple of seconds accel is a trade off with the decreased mpg. i will probably change for another 2.0 and forego the six cylinders for the running costs but I do want a higher spec inside though. BTW gave a lift to a boxster owner and he was impressed with the smooth delivery of power and definitely with the ride

I love my 4-pot - yes a straight 6 sounds better and sometimes I would love to have the extra BHP... but the 2.0 is still a hoot to drive and serves up the glory of open top 2-seater motoring in spades!

Don't be put off by the salesman in the car - you can still give it a good run - you don't want to buy a car that you haven't tested properly.

Good luck

for what you are going to use the car for, I would say 2.0 is a wise choice. I love my 2.5 but for just going to work and back, 2 ltr would do the same, the only downside is not hearing that engine noise.

as the others said, whatever you get, you won't regret it.

Thank you for all the advice its great to get peoples fed back am really tempted by the 2ltr sport it makes sense for everyday use to work and back. Great forum with honest advice :D  :D

Dont think I would have been disappointed with a 2.0i when i got my zed.

Engine aside, it's a cracking car, great chassis, and the open top driving experience is fantastic.

I like the extra torque that a 6 pot can offer. But the 2.0i has perks - fuel (mpg), tax and insurance to name a few....

+1 you know it makes sense! :)
The 2ltr sport with afew extras won me over, picking it up this tuesday :driving:
Will post pics asap, thanks again for all the advice
Really looking forward to open top motoring even in the winter :)

Congratulations and a great choice.

If you fancy shopping, my advice is go for...

- ZHP BMW gear knob (my best purchase)
- Chrome exhaust tip (joint best!)
- 3" mangowalk stubby aerial (I've got one on order but most on here like it!)
- Autoglym Fabric Hood Clean and Protect (you'll want to get this done in a dry spell)

Oh, and I've found my 2.0 benefits greatly from super unleaded, 97RON+ It's only a few pence more than bog standard and supermarket vouchers easily negate the extra cost!

Autoglym hood cleaner is top of my list for certain :)
Am sure I have made the right choice for my needs as I have a weekend toy tucked up in my lock-up so need to keep costs down on my daily

I deliberated exactly the same thing. Having previously owned a Boxter 3.2 S, Audi TT, Honda s2000 (Biggest regret getting rid of that ! ) you can see that I have experienced both 4 and 6 cylinder cars. There is no doubt that the 6 cylender cars are quicker, and sound great. But I went for the 2.0 for various reasons:

1) I tried it !! And was suprised it pulled as well as it did...More than quick enough
2) Got a newer model than I would have been able to get for the budget (2006 Sport with 108's)
3) Insurance - a LOT better !
4) Tax - Ditto above

But the main reason is that my car is a daily driver and driving to work is an average speed of less than 30mph....hence 0-60 times are a little irrelivant. Of course, if your really into max performance then the 6 cylinders are the best - but if its roof down affordable fun your after the sweet steering 2.0 is a great car.

One note of caution - They often have a really lumpy idle. I had new coils and plugs that made no difference - Had to get a BMW specialist to advance the idle speed a little to smooth it out which requires the correct dealer spec diagnostics. That said, it only cost £50 and now its sweet.

Dont let the 6cylinder boys put you off - The 2.0 is still a good car - just depends what your priorities are. Just wish they had given it twin tail pipes :(

:D Good choice, I've had my 2.0 sport for 18 months now and use it daily, changed the runflats to Falkens and the car now drives like it should. :driving:

I'm in the same situation; my heart says go for the 2.5-3.0 but then my head says go with the 2.0 for cheaper running costs. I guess it just depends on the usage, I also want the Zed for work commuting and weekend fun.
I have a 3.0l X5 already so maybe a matching pair...

Remus do a twin pipe exhaust for the 2.0 which supposedly makes a better noise, it's about £400 though.

The standard exhaust has got a raspy zing to it and isn't too loud when cruising. Screw an official BMW chrome tail-piece on and it looks quite good too.

I'm 3 weeks into z4 ownership. Went for the 2.0 sport and have to say I'm very happy with it. Have to agree about the lumpy idle though. Is this something to be concerned about long term or just an annoying foible with the 2.0 that can be lived with?

Same here except I've had my 2.0i Sport for 4 weeks and I'm very pleased with it.

I had the same issue with the Idle - Coils and plugs replaced but still the same - Went to a guy who is a BMW Independent Specialist who has dealer spec software - diagnosed that the cars Idle speed needed increasing as it was actually lower than it shows on the dash....weeks of frustration cured for £50 - car runs tons smoother now........its never gonna feel a silky as a 6, but it smooth enough !!!!

Only guys with the very latest diagnostics can get into the cars brain and adjust this idle speed - but its worth finding one - It drove me mental but now Its great ! :D

as much as I love the bigger engine ............. Its my weekend drive.
if I was commuting, I would have kept the 2.0 lt ..... no question
