We have quite a few calls to the house from bloody call centres, I didn't realize how bad it was until the other day, I picked up about 8 calls in the morning alone. All from Asian sounding people with names like Dave, Steve and Susan. So we bought a new phone with BT call minder, now fitted and not a single nuisance call this morning...Bliss :thumbsup:
 
I thought BT Call minder was an answering service?
I looked at anonymous call rejection by BT, but passed on £5.40 per month given scammed number still bypass it.
Please explain what you've got as it may be of use to my parents who want no calls except a select set of callers.
I'm guessing (probably wrongly) that it's the phone that rejects all but some programmed in numbers??
 
Actually it's called "call blocker", sorry my mistake on the call minder bit. I bought a BT8500 phone set and what it does is makes the caller say their name then press hash, this then rings through to the house and when picked up, you get a recording of the callers name. If you want to speak to them, you press a number or you can block that caller.
So far I have had no nuisance today so it's working for us :D

OK - than makes sense. I guess from that you still have the damn thing ringing, so really only a halfway house. Other end of the spectrum blocks all calls, except pre programmed numbers, which is a bit too draconian.
 
TPS = Useless, an utter waste of time in my experience.

I have barred withheld & international mumbers I now tell cold callers that I'm tied up right now, please call back in 2 minutes.
This gives me time to block their number (from device or phone handset) and I never hear from them again :-)

It can also block area codes as well as individual numbers. Highly recomended if you like undisturbed evenings or no longer want calls from a specific number.

No, the phone only rings once the caller has given their name and pressed the hash button and it appears to be working, still no nuisance calls today :D

If I've got time I usually ask them if they have double glazing in their house , or if it's ppi tell them your only 16 and don't have a credit card but your definitely interested in the rebate !
 
I use the BT 8500 phone and it works really well. Put any numbers from friends and relatives that you are happy to call you into your phone book and it just rings and works as normal.
As stated any other number does not ring unless the caller leaves a message and presses hash. The phone then rings and when you pick it up you first listen to the message they have left before deciding whether to take the call once, every time in future or block it for good.
Only get calls now from people I want to speak to now :thumbsup:
 
My first thing I did was to block anonymous callers, so anyone with withheld numbers could no longer call. That stopped the Asian people calling at night asking me if I wanted a taxi.

Unfortunately, the latest is to use a local number to yours so they come through :(

It's a nuisance. I have no problem in just hanging up the phone now without speaking. Same with people at the door, if I don't recognise them and even if they see me I don't put myself through it anymore.

At a rather sh!tty time of my life I sold double glazing door to door. A guy told me to ignore those 'no cold caller signs' etc as it was just a sign that the house owner was weak and susceptible to signing their savings away. Point being they are trained to screw you out of money, know they're doing it and you should feel no guilt by ignoring them.

Oof bit of a rant there but we should all toughen up a bit and maybe they'll stop? :|
 
We have just got a BT8500 because despite being ex-directory and on TPS we were still getting unwanted calls.

Be aware, however, that you only get calls directly from from your contact list if you have the Caller ID, otherwise everything goes via Call Guardian. Good for the person at home, very crap for the person calling!
 
A quick update, since we got this phone, no unwanted callers have got through, I can check the missed calls and there are plenty of them, all unavailable calls that have not got through. So it's doing it's job, I'm well pleased and would recommend to anyone who's had enough of cold, unwanted callers :thumbsup:
