I have just acquired a new E86 and have discovered this cable in the glove box. Any ideas what this could be?94449305-8B1C-4529-9FC9-168227F9BF4E.jpeg

You can attach a Bluetooth dongle to that and have the ability to stream music via Bluetooth.
You may need a voltage converter to sit between the dongle and cable connector though.

I haven't mate, sorry. The ipod prep cable and voltage dongle were already in the car when I bought it. Discovered by accident buried in the back of the centre console about 3 weeks into ownership.

I bought the MPOW bluetooth dongle from Amazon and I think that particular model is now discontinued.

If you research these and end up finding one make sure it's BT5.0 and APTX-HD compatible if you intend to stream HI-res music files.

The Layden i-dock 4.1 available on amazon, £24, is a quality simple to use adapter.
I have used one of these on an old Bose docking speaker with good sound quality.

BT5.0 and has the AptX and AptX-LL codecs.
Just ordered one for myself from the world's factory Eu20.00

I'm currently searching for a solution in my 07 Z4 si and stumbled upon this thread. The usual adapter that connects to the rear of the stereo did not work for me. I thought the original piece was faulty but when the replacement arirved, it too did not function. I then tried a different looking version but no luck there either. I know I can have something plugged into the aux but I'm hoping to keep wires tucked away so the cockpit stays tidy. I do have the 30 pin connector sitting in my center console but I noticed a lot of these products say they are not for use with a vehicle. The one you mentioned actually says that in the description as well -

check the compatibility list before purchasing to ensure that your speaker model is on the compatibility list.
(If it is not on the compatibility list and the 3.5mm cable is not considered, please do not buy)
Dockpro is not suitable for car use

Should I disregard this? I assume it works fine since the thread ended there but was hoping to confirm. Would I still need the 12v to 5v adapter in between this and the wired connection as mentioned previously or no? Apologies, I'm not sure I completely follow how this workaround really functions. I just want Bluetooth in the Z lol If anyone can confirm this will do the trick please speak up. Because of waiting on shipping and such this simple mod is now going on 3 weeks of troubleshooting...

No probs - I’ve spent a week trying to get the unit to connect properly behind the head unit with limited success. This just works…. Good luck
