Byebye M hello E89 35i.

First off I'm 73 and not entirely functional so take this into account when I say :-

1. I sold the M because I had difficulty exiting it without a pull and
2. I loathed the gear change which was actually worse than the original E-type.
3. I also loathed the black paintwork which is usually reserved for transport to the grave but it was all I could find at the time.
4. The front end went light under max acceleration on uneven roads.
5. My insurance company fled at any mention of improving matters.

Off we went to my local dealer's sales day where :-

1. I sat in and exited the e89 without help
2. I much preferred the automatic 'hardtop' to the farce of my wife and I struggling with the separate variety

So I went looking and found a 35i at 21k at Stratstones- a company to be avoided if the Leeds Crew are anything to go by. Bought it and discovered :-

1. IT was a car I could use and enjoy summer and winter.
2. the cockpit was a pleasure compared with the M - great feeling of space and vastly more comfortable (electric sports seats)
3. The ride was vastly better(same 18" wheels). I chose standard suspension.
4. I have completely changed my opinion of run flats. The car arrived with Bridgestone's crubber but it handles very well on our wet and greasy B-roads at marginally safe speeds despite only having 3mm on the front. I had as much fun as in the Lotus Elan+2 I built some 45 years ago.
5. Straight line performance feels close to the M but I don't go around challenging traffic light tarts.
6. the DCT gearchange is an absolute pleasure compared with the M's cogbox.
7. Top down virtually no wind. I was out today at 10 C and felt cocooned.

So, for those of you concerned about the upgrade, I suggest have no fear because BMW are slowly getting a grip on this machine.

'Not entirely functional'

You do yourself a disservice sir !

Great write up - but where are the pics :poke: :D

we have to tailor our hobbies to our changing bodies as we age unfortunately, and you sir will now continue to enjoy your car, age doesnt matter as long as we are still 21 in our heads. congratulations on not downgrading to a sensible 4 door focus like a lot of our senior citizens would have done. enjoy.

Sounds like a big improvement for you, I'm 31 and getting in and out of the M in the garage is a contortionists act with dropping the window first :) expect the new cars do that for you and look roomier.

Enjoy the Zed!

Bought from a main dealer, then they should have replaced the front tyres. 3mm is too low for AUC I would say.

Right on their limit IIRC for an auc car, 3mm across the full width.

What's an AUC car?

Oh yes, Putter Whore, having the top down is a bit like going around with you flies open. Fresher air and a greater feeling of space as Morecombe said to Wise 'It's nice out, I think I'll keep it out!'

AUC mean,s it ,s been thoroughly vetted by the main agent & will be flawless & faultfree  yeah right
What it should mean is its being sold under the banner of official dealership so they can charge you more  then its up to you to find the faults & claim under the exceptional AUC warranty that you already paid for in the screen price
Hope that helps

Congratulations young man !
An excellent choice of car.
Long may you continue to enjoy it  :driving:

Sadly I concur having had dealings with Harrogate, Thirsk, Pickering and Teesside
I dislike their smugness and refusal to give any sort of deal as they are "already the cheapest"

Call me old-fashioned (or just old) but I like to get some sort of "deal" when I part with my mint-perfect readies :D

I soon discovered what AUC meant and read numerous posts about 3mm! I am not going to waste my time arguing over 3mm with a corporation that speaks with forked tongue. Life's too short at my age and I don't like Bridgestones anyway so it gives me the excuse to try Conti Sport 5 or Mich PS2 RFT'S.

They seem very unprofessional compared with Cooper, particularly the salesman who seemed to know nothing about the car-take forever to answer the phone and longer to ring you back! We had a giggle a year or two back when a lady from Stratstones brought a Land rover of some sort over to see if it would fit in our garage. No problem she confidently announced , then drove in and scraped it down one side bending the garage door mechanism in the process. A young lady from their head office customer relations phoned me today to ask about my Stratstone experience. I bet she wished she hadn't but she did produce a reaction over the water in the lights.
