Bye bye Z4!

Well 3 weeks after buying my Z4 I've found out that it had been clocked and so the trader has given me a full refund. It was a great car despite the mileage but I decided it was for the best as it might cause some real problems when I come to sell it down the line.

Having a look through the classifieds and looking at some other possible makes of cars I've decided the Zed is still my favourite car and that I will definitely be getting another one.

So the search begins all over again. Its been nice to have an extended test drive and get to know the car a little. It will definitely make buying the next one a lot easier.

Crikey - sad to hear, but at least a satisfactory (of sorts) resolution.

Good luck in your future search mate

Thanks guys. Yeah I don't feel too gutted as there was an issue with the roof that needed sorting which they said they would sort out but never seemed to happen. I feel a lot more educated about Z4's now and the general buying process.

The way I found out was they never gave me the MOT when I picked it up and kept promising to send it to me. Well when the V5 arrived I did the MOT check here and the on the last MOT it was recorded as having 20k more miles then was on the clock. How they throught they would get away with it is beyond me.

Wonder if the dealer will chase after the previous owner, or just re-sell it to someone else?

Guess it depends on who did the roll back, right???

You should post the reg number here - the next prospective buyer might google it. I know I did before getting mine.

Agree

Sorry you had this happen but at least the dealer gave you a full refund good luck in your search

Glad you found out now and not later, but a good learning curve for the next purchase

I've been using that MOT site for sometime now and it's really good. I won a car on Ebay and checked it on the traders forecourt and registered the HPi warranty before cash changed hands

As an aside I wonder how it was clocked. Not an area I've explored and I thought if you tampered with a Bimmer it set the red dot on the odometer, but guess crooks have a workaround.

It was not a BMW dealer, was it? If it was, I would be surprised. But I thought all traders (franchise/independent) will do HPI check on cars that they are going to buy. Dodgy dealer?

Glad you got it sorted painlessly and the dealer played ball.

As said, perhaps post the reg to alert other potential buyers.

Well they collected it this evening and were very apologetic. They liked the red calipers :)

My bosses wife is selling her Z4 now which is a 3.0i, maldives, xenons, satnav, 108's, full spec pretty much and it has 25k miles. They've agreed to give it to me at trade in price which is really good. The only doubt I have is that its SMG. I'm going to test it and see how it feels. The good thing is I've been ragging a manual round for the last 3 weeks so I think I can make a good comparison and decide whether its for me or not.

Yep, bit of a bugger this. It was a nice enough car all said and done, more so considering it's real miles.

What I don't get is, the mileage change and the clear paper trail pointing out it was changed, just makes no sense when the value change for what was done was so small (if any at all in the current fluctuating market)

I think as with all things that good checks are essential. I rang up BMW to confirm the stamps in my book, checked MOT's online to correlate the service mileages/dates, and so on, even with a trade car!

Just can't be too careful these days... my advice, get access to an iPhone, and do all the checks on the internet there and then, MOT's, insured HPI etc etc... so handy a tool these days :D
OK, would take 30 mins to go and check, but what peace of mind!

Now, get that SMG driven/bought if it's appropriate... bargain of the year if SMG is right for you :D

I have not driven any BMW with SMG, but always fancy one. I like pressing paddles to change gears (like F1 car). :)

Tell us what SMG is like in Z4 after test drive.

That's close to what I did as posted above. Just used my laptop with mobile broadband, sat on the X5 tailgate feet resting on the trailer. 15 minutes later the deal was closed and car (well Ka ) was homeward bound and I was content in the knowledge all was straight and a HPi guarantee registered :)

Yeah I will definitely come back with a full report after the test drive. I love manuals and wouldn't normally consider anything else but given the current situation I think its worth a try. I also feel confident that I can make a good decision after driving the manual for the last 3 weeks. I think if I had gone straight for an SMG I would always be wondering what a manual was like.
