By god airbags hurt when they go off

Given the circumstances, this might be of interest to people - the tiny camera mentioned costs just under £60

I thought I would give a little heads up to people about my latest gadgetry splashout. I've recently been in the market for a HD dashcam, and being the type who does quite a bit of research before buying, I started sifting through reviews, top tens and what not until I stumbled on an action cam -slash- dashcam allrounder which has caused quite a stir especially among R/C aircraft enthusiasts, due to it's size, weight, quality of resolution and price.

Some of you may already be aware of the Mobius Action Cam, but for those who aren't, this guy does a great in-depth review, in fact I bought mine based on his review. This is such a great little camera for the money and it's becoming that popular that the guys over at the rcgroups forum are involved in the development of the software of the cam, and they seem to know this thing inside out. Theres a massive thread dedicated to it on the forum and even the manufacturer is in touch with the forum constantly taking on feedback etc!

I won't go on about the specs in this post as everything you need to know is in the review in the links.

Obviously some of the quality is lost when uploading to Youtube, so the reviewer handily uploaded raw footage samples. (Have a look at the 1080p30 day drive file - quality is brilliant and reg plates can easily be read)

No, read above.

I will agree. Being a dick on the road is not directly related to sexuality, car make, engine size or anything else. It just seems to be a gift that some people have. I can think of 4 particular drivers I see almost every day on my commute who drive like utter tools and the split is 50/50.

As she pulled the handbrake and didn't use the brakes, hence no brake lights, you might want to at least throw up some kind of contest in that she wasn't driving properly.

Doesn't the Highway Code cover this?...

Yup. In the ABS section:

"However, in the case of an emergency, apply the footbrake firmly; do not release the pressure until the vehicle has slowed to the desired speed."

She used a handbrake so there was no indication of her stopping. While you're in the wrong, I'd say this is a mitigating circumstance and might be worth talking to your insurance company about.

Stuart - arn't you quoting the ABS piece out of context? The reason for that surely is that when using ABS brakes you are supposed to keep pressure firmly on the pedal and let the system sort the stopping, as opposed to cadence braking, etc.?

That aside would you suggest that if you were at a traffic island holding the car on the biting point, using the handbrake to hold the car still until there was a gap in the trafic thus displaying no brake lights and were hit from behind it would be your fault?

Not trying to be contentious as op has already said it's his fault.

CJ you're right. The only time the car in front is held 'responsible' is if it is proved they have slammed their brakes on on purpose in order to create a fraudulent claim. In all other cases the driver behind is at fault, whether the car in front's brake lights are on or not.

Well that and if it can be proven the brake lights didn't work for one reason or another. I believe inspectors do check for the presence of bulbs after all the smash for cash nonsense started. All beside the point really.

Tbh it was my fault as I hit her from behind!! Didn't look like too much damage to mine but just been told it is a goner.
I have 5 years protected NCD on that car. Insurance runs out tomorrow. I cancelled my new poilcy today as I don't have a car!!
Insurance says my no claims will still be ok for when I get a new car. Just no NCB for this year.
Hopefully all goes well.
Just noticed a cut on my forehead this morning from the airbag too. :headbang:

In certain traffic accidents the investigators look at light bulbs. Apparantly they can tell if a bulb was illuminated the moment of impact as the molten filament sticks to the glass. Guess that's gone in the LED era.

All academic as shambolic and other parties are OK, insurance is paying it, no real loss of from insurance perspective, just a load of hassle getting a new car, etc.

glad its not too serious

but 6 out of 10 times when i see a driver do a stupid things on the roads, it turns out to be a woman who is either confused, panicky or just generally doesnt have a clue, 2 out of 10 its a doddery old person, 1 out of 10 a bloke who is in a rush to get somewhere and the other 1 out of 10 could be anyone else

seriously women cannot multi task when driving, they need to shut up and concentrate on driving and nothing else

Oddly, I tend to find it's men overtaking me/speeding/doing really stupid things when I am in the zed, NOT women....

Yes, but I stated it was in the abs section. Overall it says that in an emergency, use the footbrake and not the handbrake. You're taught not to use the handbrake to stop the car and in doing so she had no brake lights. I also said he was in the wrong, but this might be a mitigating circumstance.

Of course not, in that instance the car in front is stationary and not carrying out any kind of braking.

Not taken as contentious and not looking for an argument (I haven't paid for the full argument) just saying that it's not quite as clear cut as running up the back of a stationary car. If she'd used the brakes and her lights were faulty it would likely be a 50:50.

Yep. Followed a prat in an i10 this morning. Inside lane empty, he was in the outside doing 45mph and kept ducking down fiddling with something under the dash. He was all over the place and I just had to sit back and watch which whilst entertaining was little frustrating as the speed limit is 70mph.

Bad driver and good ones come in all shapes and sizes. Remarkable that, who'd have thought it!!

i dont disagree with that statement, i often overtake women who are doing 15mph in a 30mph zone but to name a few instances of women being in the wrong. i had one pull out of a give way right in front of me yesterday even though she saw me coming.... i have no idea what caused her to do that and it gave me a fright. wish i had kept the footage from my dash cam now lol

another time, i was stuck behind a x5 on a dual carriageway a few months back. it was in the outside lane doing a constant 60mph, the nearside lane was clear for miles ahead but the driver wouldnt pull over for love or money. after a minute of this, i got annoyed and undertook as i looked over i saw the woman driver was driving with her nose about an inch from the steering wheel peering forwards with no sense of what was going on around her. i found that infuriating and a tad dangerous

another time i saw a woman reverse parking. she bumped the car behind, then the one in front and when she eventually got it in, she decided she didnt want to park there and moved her car to the other side of the road

as for the 45% and 55% stat, based on the average mileage of the average male and the amount of male drivers on the road doing long journeys as opposed to the shopping, work or school run then yeah they are more likely to have more accidents. last year i covered 15k miles without an accident

now i am not saying all women are bad drivers but how many times have you seen a woman have an accident or a close call and they either freeze, get hysterical or burst into tears.... i've never once seen a guy do that

but to summarise, guys can be just as bad but you will find that the guys are usually/ mostly younger drivers showing off

Golden rule I ALWAYS follow, never be close enough that you can't stop in time.

Tim.

Great mantra and wherever possibe I follow it, but in reality it's not possible in modern day driving to maintain it and you simply have to use a degree of assumption and anticipation to reduce the margins.

Example woudl be:
Busy congested motorways with thinking at 21m and stopping at 75m that's 23 car lengths (really approx). If you left half that cars woudl continue to pile in gaps and tailgaters woudl soon be undercutting, etc.

Commuter traffic into cities where traffic has to clear lights and busy junctions and pack itself tightly.

I think most accidents these days are caused by a lack of awareness of what's going on by one party with poor driving by the other (look at the opening post in this thread where we may have both).
Hopefully if I'm doing at least one of these then accidents get avoided and compensate for the other driver.

This is true, once you get a bit older and have been driving for a while, you realise that 90% of people don't care about driving/cars and are just trying to get from A to B with no interest for the bit inbetween (apart from being in the most comfort they can afford!). That's when you stop showing off/racing everyone you come across and driving like a douche thinking someone's impressed by it or gives a s**t. Once you drive for your own enjoyment on decent roads that aren't just a dual carriageway foot to floor drag race driving becomes a lot more enjoyable.....in my book anyway :)

I don't get why it is automatically deemed to be the car at the back that is at fault?

In this instance, the car in front stopped unexpectedly without any warning (brake lights etc) and the car at the back was simply caught out, due to the car in fronts sudden braking.

The car in front is the cause of the collision?

However, when in doubt at who is at fault, get the whisky out and offer the other driver some to calm their nerves. Then decline to have some yourself and wait for the cops....

Brake lights are only there to say you are braking as a guide for other road users. You can still slow down heavily via engine braking, regen braking on new hybrids can be quite a high deceleration.

Given a handbrake is many times less effective than a foot brake, I'd say she was slowing down pretty slowly, and was going slowly to use it at all to stop at a roundabout with other traffic coming onto the roundabout in front of her.

Anyone here tried to stop quickly on their handbrake?

I know your comment is partially tongue in cheek, given the last paragraph, however it's just one of those rules of the road. You hit the car in front you're to blame. Pretty much end of..

You should always be ready to stop regardless of what the car in front does. In this instance it was entirely caused by the following car, (and admitted as such) looking to the right and in effect assuming the driver in front would drive off.

As MrWhippy says you can't rely on brake lights - if the car in front changes down a gear, uses strong engine braking of a diesel engine, etc. is it their fault if you drive into them? Clearly not.
