Buzz rattles, any ideas

I have two Buzz rattles which happen at certain speeds, on certain terrain, I've found them but need some help to cure them;

1. Coming from Driver side sunvisor, if i put a rag behind it , it stop, or if i hold it. tried some felt pads on top side of visor, but this only works sometimes. ideas?

2. Coming from Plastic housing around roll hoop behind passenger seat. again if i hold it when buzzing it stops. i thought it was the wind deflector, so i removed it, but it was still there. its definetley coming form that plastic as grabbing it stops it immediately.

Any help would be appreciated...

Welcome to BMW build quality! :fuelfire:

Not sure about your latter problem but I have just had my passenger sun-visor replaced as it was rattling. There was something internal moving about, perhaps the housing of the vanity mirror. Anyway, the rattle has gone now. Not saying you have the same problem but the way I tested it was to pull the visor down and flick it hard with my finger (while stationary of course!). Doing that determined that it was the visor itself and not the mounting. Worth a try.

Hope you get rid of them as they're the sorts of things that eat away at you... :(

Almost the same here - rattling visors and something behind the roll hoops but fairly sure it's the plastic inserts from the wind deflector that buzz

Ok, I've removed the sun visor, and it does not appear to have any loose bits built in, so I've put it back with silicon grease on the joining parts, so far so good.

Also slipped a very thin piece of rubber behing the wind deflector bracket on the roll bar. I won't be driving the road that seems to make this worst until tomorrow, so fingers crossed.

Always better to try and fix rattles yourself if possible - avoids the dealer adding new ones!!!

The sun visor fix seems to have worked on all terrain, I've noticed that passenger side does it minimally too, so will be stripping greasing and reassembling at the weekend.

As for the roll hoop :headbang:

The only thing that works so far is a very heavy elastic band around the hoop, works, but doesn't look to good. Need a dry day so roof can be own to give all round access. If I find a fix I will report it.

I had the roll hoop rattle on mine when it was still under warranty. They replaced the hoop covers and all was well. Essentially it is cheap nasty plastic, and the tolerances are all over the place. If you are lucky they fit well, but the UK rooads soon shake the c*** out of them.

Thanks Davey, still under warranty , only four months old. But my experience of dealers fixing rattles is not good. 9/10 they claim they can not reproduce, then they try to fix nd create rattles somewhere else.

That's said, if I can't get to the bottom of, back o the dealer it goes. Bing on the in, then the lid will be off and I won't hear anything :D

I'm trying t0 be patient, but I'm coming to the conclusion this car is a rattle box! they pop up intermittantly all over the place.
It's in danger of ruining the experience, and I can't believe I'm being over the top, no one could possibly live with what I'm experiencing... sometimes! which of course makes it worst. As I know if I take to the dealer they will say they can't reproduce.

Perhaps warmer weather will bring a change, i really hope so!

Ok, a bit of feedback..

Got the Z into our store at work, so in the dry and warm, stacked the roof, then cleaned all door, roof and window seals. then coated with Gummi Plege, left to soak up for 30 minutes, then wiped over with lint free cloth.

So far I have silence!!! I suspect this will need doing monthly (ish)

Standard stereo in mine seems fine. Covers up the loud rattle I currently have on my rear deck... once that rain stops, the roofs going down and that deck is going to get the tightening and padding of its life...

Never had a single rattle in mine, occasionally get the odd creak from the roof when the car has been standing in hot weather but goes once you get going.

BMW build seems fine to me :)

Yours is brand new, I'd hope it doesn't have any rattles!

Give it a couple of years.. Mine had just one tiny noise when I bought it.. Now there are all sorts of noises. As time goes on and that short travel suspension takes its toll, there's no way to avoid it.

Actually, it seems I found it... ehem... looks like that little flap in the boot floor, with the little turn lock on where you can pop bits and bobs (I have those elastic hook things in there to tie down large loads)... well it seems the flap was unlocked and clacking up and down on bumps... ehem, so not a rear deck issue after all. Next time I get a noise, I'm going to empty the car and make sure everything's as it should be before knocking the build
