Buying my first Z4 roadster - which model M or 3.0?

Just been and done a test drive in a Z4 - took out the 2.5 auto which was a little slow and the ride was a bit soft for me (took the new SLK out and it felt very similiar in ride). Took the Z4m out and loved it. However they did not have a 3.0 to try. I am currently driving a 04 TT Convertible 3.2 DSG quattro, which i love, but needs to go. I will be using the car as an everyday car - including work, short motorway drive and a short serious of speed bumps and tend to drive out and about in the country at the weekends.

What would you guys suggest? Really need to get a handle on the running costs and day to day issues of the M. Insurance is the same as my TT, but wondered what most of you get mph both ont he M and the 3.0. Also is the 3.0 that much slower? Fallen in love with the M, but if running costs are massively different then probably need to try the 3.0.

Looking at buying ex BMW dealer - 06 M or 07 3.0.

Set my heart on a Z4, just need to decide which way to go. Oh really do not want black leather, not really found many 3.0 with anything but black, seems rare to get the two tone leather or a different colour leather, presume this was because of the stupid cost for this option new. Does the different leather colours make much difference on resale? Is there any most have features on the M?

Just cannot wait to own one. Nearly parted with the cash for the M today, but thought i needed to do a little more research.

Clutch is heavier, it's thirstier, servicing is more expensive.

Not really, I doubt you would notice much in the "real world" :) Read the now-famous thread here!!!

Always get as new as you can, TBH the prices are getting pretty close now.

Leather was standard on both cars, the bi-coloured leather was optional, but not excessively so.

No.

Nav, bluetooth, heated seats, hifi upgrade.

There are loads of posts on this so if you spend a bit of time in the ///M section you'll unearth them. At the end of the day they are both awesome cars and you'll be pretty happy with either, and coming from a TT (even a 3.2) you'll love it.

Agree with most of what Mike says there.

For the daily grind and the running you'll do, the 3.0 is probably the better option (and as you say, newer).

M mate. I had a 06 plate 2.5i roadster, was lookign to change to 3.0si or M. Drove the 3.0si steering felt very light and wasnt connecting with me. M was awesome. finally bought the M Bit expensive but at the end of the day puts a smile on my face everytime i unlock the car. drives amazing. the power, engine sound everything with prices being so cheap its worth goign for the M. its a better car, will probably hold its value and also they have stopped making Z4M now. so if they dont put a V8 in it which I cant see happenign for th enext 3-4 yrs it will be a great car. I get about 20mpg complete city driving, obviously i dont drive crazy in the city, I get about 25mpg in th emotorways and between that on A roads when I really enjoy it. After calculating I found u will need an extra tank every month based on 800 miles a month in comparison to my 2.5i(3.0si not too far behind the 2.5i). But its definitely worth it coz the actual cost was not much.
good luck mate with ur decision

I would go for M(of course based on ur financial situation).

Thanks for the info guys, think it has to be the M. Life is too short, my partner keeps trying to get me to buy a ford focus ST (though the new RS looked tempting, if it had not been so boy racer looking - bit too old for that look  !) to be more sensible, though he is a fine one to talk, he drives a bright orange 350z with a very loud exhaust!!! The running costs do not sound too much more than the TT - the insurance is exactly the same with the multicar policy i have. i get about 26 mpg with the TT, so not looking at much more there. i pay higher road tax already, so the only difference is going to be i have an 2006 instead of an 2007 and a few £100 extra a year servicing.

Test diriving the St tomorrow, just to prove i do not like it and then it off to phone the BMW dealer and get the deposit put on the M. :D

I've had alot of the latest hot hatches over the past few years - VXR Nurburgring (just sold), Focus ST, Focus RS, Leon Cupra R, Civic Type R (EP3) and ok i've only driven the Z4MR i'm getting tomorrow for 45 mins or so but by god it knocks the previous lot into a cocked hat if that 45 mins is anything to go by. Yes its more to run but if you dont do mega mileage then servicing will be once every 2 years, note that the servicing will be quite alot more expensive than any TT (i'm sure anyway).

You only live once, if you think you can afford go for it! :driving:

The 3.0 is a much more sensible choice given your stated driving pattern, tax, fuel, servicing, etc. The M is a much more hardcore car, but ultimately delivers better performance for the times you can or want to use it.

Try the 3.0 with an open mind and then you'll know what you want/need, but both are great cars

Just to note that the 3.0 is lower at the front with regards to speed bumps then the M ...

Neither, buy a coupé. :) Better looking and in rain-soaked England it's more practical. For the five days of true top down weather we have in Montréal, I did not see the point in buying a convertible.

Once you've test driven an M... it's hard to not pull the trigger on one.

The 3.0si is still the more practical of the two. I'm just not the practical type. 8)

Ah, but I am!

Have 3.0Si coupe and LOVE it. Yep, an M would have been fun, but mine's a daily driver and I needed to take into consideration the costs of running it day in , day out, for quite a few years.

I would agree, but the coupe/roadster is a personal choice at the end of the day. :D

If insurance/road tax is the same for you, I think the main thing to consider is servicing costs. An Inspection I for an M due at around 22-24k miles is £600-£700, and the Inspection II at 44-48k ish can be over £1000. Oil change services are in between at a few hundred pounds. If you do a lot of miles, then this could prove expensive. Plus I would guess that on average you will get something between 5-10 mpg less out of the M. Don't know prices for the 3.0Si but I'm sure they are cheaper.
