Buying / importing goods from USA - duties question

If you haven't already looked try Watchfinder Mr Wilks, they have good stocks of mint secondhand watches and was very pleased in the way they handled the trade in of my Tag Carrera against a Monaco Gulf and gave a good trade in price. They're prices can be slightly higher than other retailers e.g. Blowers but they gave me hundreds more on the trade in.

I couldn't imagine a worse way of spending a weekend ( not the treating mrs w part )
City breaks hold zero allure for me & NY being one of the biggest & furthest away I would rather crawl to the channel on my hands & knees over broken glass

I'm with you there, much prefer to be out in the sticks than a big city. I bought a steering wheel from a guy in Canada once and he marked it as a gift and i had it inside a few days no issues, to duty etc. I believe (someone who works in the post office told me) that the tax man relies on the declared insurance value of goods to work out the duty. I fell foul of this when a us vendor put an insurance value of $200 on a $85 item i bought from them, basically imports duties cost me about 50% of what the item did on that, plus the delivery on that occasion I was furious.
Do you have any friends/family who could send it to you as a declared gift?

The problem is Tim that of the 2 watches i'm keen on one is almost 3 x the price in UK * the other doesn't seem to be available in UK :?
