Buying Guide/Optional Extras

Hi All,

I'm currently looking at getting a UK 3.0 Z4 Roadster. Probably a 2003/2004 model.

Is there a definitive list of optional extras that were available anywhere? Also are there any extras that I should particularly look out for?

Also what is the difference with the SE and non SE? I'd like the Ellipsoid wheels but apart from that I guess the more extras the better :)

Finally, when I go to view a Z4, is there anything in particular I should look out for?

Thanks a lot,

James

Not sure on a definitive list, but IMO the must have options are,
Xenons
Heated Seats
Sports Package
Sports Seats

I agree Aebous, I have all the listed but If I had the choice I would have added the electric folding wing mirrors, very useful.

You have to decide what's important to you. Other than satnav or mabe an auto gearbox, the extras arn't going to cost you much more. On a personal note, I really wanted cruise control and the comfort pack but all the others are nice to have. Having driven cars with and without xenons, I wouldn't pay a premium from new but again they are nice to have if the car comes with them. Sports seats are a good improvement and the heating is a novelty if you've not had them before.

Also consider that cars with few extras are going to be less desireable when it comes to resale.

James,

when you view all the usual applies - check for panel damage repairs, even tyre wear, full service history. Also, the hood mechanisms have been known to fail when the drains become blocked. Not easy to check but if you're buying private see if it was garaged or covered? If it's in a dealer drop the hood part way and see if there is an accumulation of crap around bottom of hood. Good luck

I run a 2003 3.0i and also have the original factory brochure for that year so could compile a definitive list, but the question always arises as what was an extra option and what was a choice. For instance there were around 10 styles of wheels for that time. Ellipsoid and Star spoke being 2 of the favourites.

Start with what you want. Colour, gearbox, interior trim colour, wheel style, etc.
I would seek it with:
Sports seats - (pure pleasure to drive in)
Sport button (especially if an auto)
Sat Nav (Beautifully integrated and adds to resale)
Heated seats (Hood down at least your behind is warm)
Xenon - mandatory and way too expensive to upgrade to OEM)
Cruise control (but a £80 plug in retrofit)

Some like FBMWSH. I prefer a careful owner, low mileage and a pile of paperwork to support everything ever done

Nothing to really look out for other than accident damage, panel fits, stone chipped front and sides near rear arches and wear on the hood (tears/cuts would be a big replacement cost.) Kerbed rims and worn tyres cost to fix.

Shout out if you have any specific questions

But don't get too hung up about extras as some are easy to retrofit, cruise control is available for most models as a retrofit kit.

Cruise is an easy retrofit - if the car is pre Oct 2004, otherwise you need to install the wiring loom as well

...to add to the list

-auto lights
-auto wipers

personally, try and get something newer than an 05 as your will get the facelifted version
