Buying from CA Automotive...

Your details are on lots of computers you have no control over, believe me... But it's best not to make it easy for someone to rip you off.

You're welcome

Shop elsewhere - no way I'd want to risk the security of my main forms of ID like that.

Too late  I guess I thought by their rep it would be ok, I'm sure it still is, I'll let you know the outcome anyway.

The question to always ask yourself is; Would you hand out personal info to a complete stranger who came to your door sellling a product, probably not, then buying over the internet should be no different. Anyone can put up a website and word it in such a way to make the company appear more corporate and legit when in reality it could be some dodgy geezer working out of a bedroom in a flat.

Sure nothing untoward going on, more that my details might be held on someone's computer that I have no control over worries me a tad :/
You could ask them whether they are registered under the Data Protection Act to store your personal details, and also ask for an assurance that your details will be wiped as soon as the transaction has completed.

They also should be encrypting your credit card details in accordance with PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard), and in no circumstances should they be storing the CVV2 (the 3 digit code on the back of the card, which is used for CNP - Card Not Present - transactions), even encrypted.

DO NOT send a scan of your card or your driving licence. That information is enough information to firstly rape your card, and secondly steal your identity. A legitimate business will be working with a payments services processing company and taking your details securely online, on the phone or in person. Worth saying that I work for a payments services processor, so I do know something about this... Though it appears common sense kicked in anyway

Not that anyone doubted it, Bing is absolutely correct. I also know a bit about this stuff and even if this merchant is acting to protect their best interests and quite innocently, you really don't want to be offering up all of the information they have asked for. There are some quite spectacular recent examples of merchants' websites being hacked.

Andy, you'll need to post copies of your passport, the login details of your bank and the number of English pounds in your account I could borrow permanently in order for you to receive any advice from me on here - please proceed with providing this information within 24 hours... :D :poke:

Andy need to post all the details to me as well as I am standing as guarantor

F NO!!!

dont send them the backside of your card mate, those 3 digits on there are enough to (as someone has already said) RAPE your card..

 Cheers guys, feel a bit stupid now! Was literally about to send the email with the deets before I thought twice as well! Usually uber careful about this kinda stuff!
Anyway, I've sent them an email asking to confirm the details they want and I'll go from there...

Just had this email back from Roy after asking to confirm what details I need to send:

Good morning Andrew

Thanks again for your order last nite, all ordered with japan as promised. .

Please can you email over scan of both sides of the card, and your d license showing photo and signature .
Many thanks
Roy

Please let me know if we can help further.
Regards
Roy

Hmmmmmmmmm

Call them and tell them you are not happy sharing images of your card and identity with them. You are not legally obliged to provide it - in fact your bank manager would go mental if you ran the email past him/her. Like I said, offer to provide a utility bill... Also, does it say on their website that they need you to provide this info ?

Finally, why on earth do they need to see your signature ? I'd forgotten that's on your licence.

I did wonder why they would need to see a signature seeing as that isn't relevant to anything, or my photo for that matter....
Email sent enquiring this...cheers again Bing

Oh and no mention on the website

Just got sent the below, might just send a copy of a utility bill and blank out certain details (account no, sort code etc)...

Yes payment has cleared many thanks, but as explained we do need those scans before we can send you the kit, which you agreed to on the phone prior to my taking payment.

This is actually standard procedure with many companies now for orders over a certain value ( eg M Style, Evolve etc ) and are conditions imposed by our bank. So far customers have understood the position and not had any issues sending us such scans J

We definitely need a scan of the card both sides please, ( there is no security risk to you as we already have the card details, we just need to know its your card and in your possession) but if you are concerned about the driving licence then how about a utility bill, would that be more comfortable ?

By hook or by crook we will get this resolved to both our satisfaction i am sure J

Let me know
All the best
Roy

DON'T DO IT.......and its not a fair request! No reputable company operating a card payment service requires this as there are sufficient checks and balances in the card processing system to ensure security. Contact your card merchant and tell them CA are requesting these details and let them sort it out with CA.

Not relevant to your situation, but a measure of the company - I've bought from CA Automotive on a couple of times and found their customer service somewhat poor on both occasions. On the second (and last) occasion, Roy assured me over the phone when I placed an order that they had an item in stock and it would arrive within a few days. When it didn't show up, they then told me they had had it on back order from the States for a while and it would be another four to six weeks wait. To top it off, I then had to pay a fee for it to clear customs. They seem to have a monopoly on some items, especially imported from the USA, which I'm sure explains their success. It certainly cannot be explained by the quality of their service. I would avoid using them if at all possible.

This. What they are asking is NOT standard procedure at all, and I have serious doubts that their bank would be asking for this information. To be honest, I'd just go in personally now and show them the card. They may be reputable, but you don't know them and who they employ. By the way - if they are currently holding your card details on file then that's very bad form. And as long as they have your details, or a copy of your card, there is a security risk, however small.

Not to mention that some grease monkey working there gets hold of it and sells it on ...

Although I must say that my bank has been excellent in spotting fraud on my card, and even though it is a pain when the card is blocked, they seem to be very advanced in spotting dangerous transactions no matter how small.

There's nothing that I'd want so badly to comply with the seller's request. I'd cancel the order and ask for a full refund and report the matter to my credit card company.
