Buying EBC Ultimax + Redstuff

I'm going to be getting EBC Ultimax Discs and Redstuff Pads all round in the next month.

It looks like the best price I can find is to get the lot from Eclipse racing, which comes out at about £425 where EBC direct was closer to £465. Ebay doesn't give enough of a saving to be worth the risk of counterfits.

I know there was a group buy from EBC direct last year, which looked to offer a pretty decent discount and there was talk of registered marshalls getting 50% off? So a few questions for anyone in the know:

1. Any chance the group discount may still be available (like, a forum discount)?
2. Any one else in the market for new brakes so we could get another group discount?
3. Any registered marshalls in the market and want to donate their discount? ;)

Also, someone recently mentioned a BMW brake fitting kit with new clips and the like? Anyone got a part number?

i was going to install red stuff, but from what i read on here it put me off a bit. went for the green stuff and they seem great ! might be worth investigating the disadvantages of the red stuff pads before purchase. just a thought.

Redstuffs really are like/hate!! Inital bite and general sensitivity is very gentle with a firm (not spongey) pedal, especially when cold. Great on a car when tiny modulations in brake force are needed, like trail braking in a light front-end car. Dont mix them with an OEM pad though... I still have OEM's on the rear and while it makes the bias perfect on the dry/flat surfaces, downhill and in wet conditions will make the rears lock first due to their keener initial bite.

They do excel when pushed hard though... On the latest Wales run they were fantastic with absolutely no fade when others were experiencing some.

Dont believe the 'low dust' part, its rubbish!

If you drive the car quite hard, and like a firm pedal id give them a try. If not, stay away!

Ed, the Wales run kind of concreted my decision to go for reds over greens; the fade I experienced was just outright scary at points.
Of course, I am running very worn OEMs and my fluid is due for a change in a few months... but none-the-less.

I'm really not bothered about the dusting; I'm becoming a bit of a detailing geek (GF thinks I'm getting far too excited about the Very Cherry Acid-Free wheel cleaner I ordered yesterday... she doesn't understand! :)), so plan to be washing every week, if the car's been used.

I do like a firmer pedal, and I had far too much fun in Wales... so that is the sort of driving the car will be set up for :)
My only slight concern is motorway driving, are they going to cool down to a point that they'll surprise me when I get to my junction?

about 3 weeks too late for me :(

had to replace mine pretty quickly - went for Ultimax + Greenstuff, awesome now bedded in :D

I also prefer the Ultimax and greenstuff combo. Been running it for a year on the Zed and very pleased. Virtually zero dust too :)

Each to their own based upon driving style and needs

dammit... now I'm back to the Redstuff/Greenstuff decision...
EBC do state that Greenstuff is for road use up to 200hp... where Reds is up to 300hp, which also makes me lean towards Red

Anyone on the Wales day running Greenstuff? How'd they fare?

I did the last Wales run on Greenstuff. As an aside I also tow a 2 ton Jeep plus trailer on an X5 on Greenstuff so near 5 ton all up and that's been on them for 4 years.

My wife also drives the Zed and I have no intention of her failing to stop on hard cold pads on a Winter morning and also have larger rotors that make the most difference.

You're call - there is no right answer

Just to throw a spanner in your works, I've got EBC turbo groove discs front and back and have yellow stuff pads. The bite from stone cold is fine and the braking from speed is really good. I did the same deliberations as you and went with the recommendation from the suppliers.I'll report in in 2 weeks time when I come back from a blast round the ring and let you know what I think of them then.

My contact at EBC says not to use the Yellowstuffs on the road unless you drive quite hard as they are made as a track pad really.
He said Green are fine for normal driving, but upgrade to Red if you drive in a more 'sporty' manner.

However, I've got Yellows on the Z4 because I had Yellows (a custom compound though) on the e34 M5 before that and liked their performance at a reasonable cost, compared to the Pagids and Ferodo's I used to use (DS2500/DS3000 Ferodo and RS19/RS29 Pagid).

///M's need good brakes due to their problem of being far too heavy for much use  :|
Get some brembos to slow that big girl down

It's Alcons I want, but they're £4k :o
Plus I've got no job to pay for all the upgrades I want anyway, so might not have a car to put Alcons on to

i saw a link on the z-roadster forum for a set of BMW Performance 6 (or may be 4) pot caliper conversion for around £1000 (front), but the link doesnt work anymore...

does anyone know what the difference is between e46 m3 and z4m and z4 (non m) brakes? I ve seen a few set of 6 pot upgrades for e46 m3 csl for sale, just want to know if they fit the same

Is there a big noise difference between Ultimax and Turbo Groove discs?

I ordered some greenstuff with Turbo Groove discs but they are stuck in the UK due to the ash :headbang:
