Buying cars during "lockdown"

Nanu. The cat in your avatar. That's a British silver spotted isn't it? I had one 30 years ago from the lady who bred the cats in the Whiskas adverts.

Steve is correct if you get caught you will be set home, but again spending £20k I would want to test drive the car for certain, no way would I be parting with that amount of cash with out a viewing.

The lockdown is not going to end anytime soon, difficult to know what to d but as per the majority, just wait as cars will always come along closer to home.

Sean I live in farming country! If I wanted a John Deere tractor I have my pick; M3s not so common. :)

I think I just talked myself of doing it!
I believe this is the correct decision. You need a clear head when buying a second user car and from what you are saying, I don't think you are there yet. Please don't feel insulted by me saying that, I am just giving my opinion based on your posts. "feeling you are getting old, doing the right thing for months, an M3". It seems that £20,000 is 'burning a hole in your pocket.' Everyone else is correct, wait a while longer, then make a decision, even during Covid restrictions, if you must, or you might end up regretting buying your car.
If this reads like I am patronising you, then I apologise, it is always difficult to get true meanings across in type. :)

Thanks, that made me laugh.

But I had to go to tractor territory (Rutland) for my MC, so you never know!

Absolutely agree, no offence taken! The money burning a hole in my pocket not so sure about, but you may be right :(
I think it may be (without getting too heavy) my release of depression due to the current situation. Doing things that make (or supposedly) make you happy for a short period. Thanks Dr BeeEmm (I'm not being sarcastic either).

Hah! Rutland isn't tractor territory. They're so posh they invented their own county. Rutland doesn't exist. It's Leicestershire! Like Huntingdonshire; it's Cambridgeshire. Pretentious tw*ts! :D

Surrounded by squaddies! Could be worse, could be Aldersh*t.

You will only be wrong once. What if you are really are unlucky and the seller is asymptotic and leaves the virus in the car. Very unlikely I know but you are taking a risk and possibly putting your life and the lives of your family at risk. In my view, just not worth it. But we live in a democracy and you must decide what you think is the right thing to do.

Good point. I am actually impressed by the number of "don't take the risk" replies. Restores my faith in the "Great British public". Thanks

You could always wait a month or so... if it was meant to be, the car still wont have sold, and you can go pick it up when the situation improves - possibly mid march, realistically april. but the first thing to be eased will be essential journeys - pubs, clubs and restaurants can all stay closed as far as im aware, as long as we're allowed to travel more than 5 miles from our front door, and self catering cottages are open again!

is there any likelihood of negotiating a holding deposit with the seller? some amount of money to hold the car for 3 months, and then if you dont buy, he keeps the deposit and relists the car.

This is a good idea but why should keep the deposit if the car is not as described?

The deposit pays for the sellers time in holding the car for you, as opposed to selling it to someone else sooner. If you end up not buying the car for whatever reason, you can't give the seller that 3 months back.

The seller might not even consider a holding deposit anyway - i wouldn't, if i had a car for sale, i'd want it sold asap. But that puts me back to my first point, wait a month or two, if its still for sale, it was meant to be.

Go and buy the car and drive it home. Stop worrying. Plenty of us have to go to work everyday, surrounded by strangers who don't seem to understand what 2 metres is. If you're buying a car privately, it's highly likely you'll be dealing with 1 person, outside. I'm sure you can keep your distance.

A guy in my work went to buy a car when we were in regional tiers (he was in tier 3,car was in tier 1) and had no issues. He just kept his distance and wiped the dash down before he drove it away.

I understand what the deposit is for, but if I put £500 down on a car claimed to be mint and when I got there it was a bag of nails so I didn't buy it then I would want my deposit back - its also about the car being as described.

As I said, if it was me, and you’re not wanting to buy remotely again I’d be waiting until you’re happy with how you can conclude the deal in person, restrictions allowing

The car in question is in Harrow, NW London. I'm in Lincolnshire!
It is perfectly acceptable for me to drive to Heathrow and back everyday for work, but not this. I can interact with many people in the offices I work in but not with one person to purchase a car! I understand the thought process behind it (IE earning a living is still more important than sopping the spread) , but it still doesn't make any sense.
Another downside is that I can only do internet banking from a computer, not my phone. I don't like "apps". I suppose I could download the banking app if necessary.

My advice would be to wait and do it properly but get the temptation if you feels it’s the right car.
I live in Harrow where the car you like is based and if near to me, I don’t mind (socially distantly) kicking the tyres on it and giving an exterior and engine sound appraisal and video recording for you.

Only if local to me (on my running routes) as don’t want to be a hypocrite with my advice!
