Buying an eBay item outwith Ebay?

I am looking to purchase an item on eBay, I have offered a reasonable amount less than advertised and the seller is prepared to sell for my offered price, although he wants to do it outwith eBay so he doesn't get stung with their fees. I am happy to pay through Paypal and I will cover the 3.4% fee. Is there anything that I need to be aware of by doing this?

Only that I'm not sure what happens when the item you 'purchased' fails to arrive - or arrives in a worse state than the ad states.

Although saying that, there's also risk on the sellers side as you could say the item is not as described and get Paypal to refund you.

Buyer is more likely to win a Paypal dispute than a seller.

You wont be covered by the buyer protection.

So if you get a brick in the post you are not protected - and will have to go through small claims court.

That being said i have done this loads of times.. and its been fine... not much more risk then buying something off the forum really.

I am going through the "paying for goods or services" as apposed to "gift" and I'm adding the 3.4% charge onto the amount I send him, so Paypal states that I am covered.

I've done this as a seller and buyer a few times - but would only do this as 'cash on collection'

If I was to buy another item online, lets say, advertised on PH Classified and I paid via Paypal. Would I be covered by paypal in that instance?

Anyway, I can let the cat out of the bag now. I spoke to the guy on the phone and he seems a very genuine guy and he has 100% feedback on eBay so hopefully all will be okay. The item in question was a Carbon Leather interior trim. It was up for £650. I offered him considerably less, in which he would accept only if we concluded the deal away from eBay so he didn't lose out on anymore money through eBay fee's. Hopefully it will be with me by Friday and all will be in order  :)

Nice, you'll get that nasty alu trim out of your imola beauty

Possible for you or someone you know to pick up and pay cash?

I ended up doing that with my x5 wheels as I suspected it may be a bit of a suspicious sale...seller even gave me a little discount too!

Ah, I'm not going to disclose the final price, but lets just say that it was a large chunk away from the £650 asking price and more in line with previous Carbon Trims to sell on eBay. It was by no means of the imagination cheap, but how often do they come up for sale? I'm happy with the price paid, and in the future I very much doubt I will struggle to recoup my money if I sell them. As Bing said, I can finally get rid of the biggest let down in my car - that gash Alu trim. It just looks and feels nasty and cheap. Really lets the interior down in my opinion. Now, I best get reading up on how to remove it :|

And what if someone from the forum was bidding on the same item?

It wasn't an Auction. Buy it Now or Best Offer. I obviously made the Best offer so it's all mine. Fair and square

Even if it wasn't fair, I wouldn't be concerned in the slightest. It's a dog eat dog world, and for something as rare as this - I was having it :P

so the aluminium dash will up for grabs?

i'd be interest if cheap, just for messing with

Potenially, although I reckon I might keep it. When I come to sell up, I will probably make more by putting the Alu back in and selling on the CL. I will let you know if I do decide to sell though :)

Did you not get an email from eBay which states "Do not respond to the sender if this message requests that you complete the transaction outside of eBay. This type of offer is against eBay policy, may be fraudulent, and is not covered by buyer protection programs. Learn More at http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/rfe-spam-non-ebay-sale.html"?

No I didn't get any such message. I paid the guy through Paypal, and he removed his eBay listing. Nothing ever went through as being sold on eBay. It was essentially advertised on eBay, but the sale concluded in the same way that I would buy something from you and paying through Paypal.
