This is my 1st post on here so hello to you all!

Just wanted to quiz you to see if you have any info on what i should be looking out for when i start looking for my coupe. Any known issues or pointers you can give me would be appreciated. How was your 2nd hand buying experience? What is a realistic price i should be looking for when buying from a dealer??

Look forwards to chatting with you all.

D

Buy BMW Approved Used Car (AUC) to get remainder of 3yr warranty and full main dealer support. There's quite a few well optioned 07 07 cars out there, all with reg nos Y*07*** ..., at the dealers at the moment with prices around £32 - 36k depending on mileage and options. There's not much in the way of problems to look out for. The M3/CSL running gear and the base Z4 are well sorted and proven and any early parts failures will be covered by warranty anyway. The only problem I've had in 35000mls of Z ownership is a broken rear spring - I blame 10 speed bumps a day... sigh! I would ask to see the service record to see if its had warranty work and/or crash damage repairs. The dealer that has done the work can see the details other dealers can only see its been in and where so it's possible to call them for info if necessary. It may not have been to a BMW bodyshop so check panels, gaps inside and out and look for evidence of paint spray. Originally the Z4's have a dark grey internal painted surfaces, engine bay for example, that's hard to replicate.

Buy on condition, scratches, parking knocks etc and take a close look at the tyre shoulders. Any abrasion beyond the normal contact patch will indicate the car has been driven (cornered) hard. Check the mileage to service, add to the total mileage and if its much less than 14000mls it might have been driven hard although it's quite hard and scarey to thrash a Z4M. In fact some would say ignoring the running in limits will produce a free reving engine!

Make sure all the manuals are there, stamped up by a BMW dealer. The Z4M has a 1400mls running in service/

Good time to buy Scottie, lots of ex BMW staff cars coming on to the AUC market, cars they have driven from new for a few months, I am sure you could get a cracking deal. Guy over on BM3W had just got one almost full loaded for £31K, so shop about and I am sure you will get what your looking for. Like Lancs said, not too much to worry about, proven engine and all parts are proven used parts from M products.

Good luck mate!

Thanks for your help!

Can i ask what is it with the Y*07*** reg? I keep seeing is in the forums. I am guessing that it has something to do with BMW UK owned cars???

Also what is BMW ConnectedDrive-Assist??

I am looking for the following extras:

Bluetooth phone prep
Elect. Fold Exterior Mirrors
Front Seat Heating
Navigation-system Professional

Anything else you recommend?

My Y*07*** reg car was built late 06 and registered Mar 07 and as I said there were quite a few similarly reg no cars. I'm assuming They stood around for a while and BMW invited the dealers to register (batch registered en masse) and use them and maybe employees too so they could be off loaded at a discount into the AUC scheme before summer 07 ends. When I was looking the cars I narrowed down to were all £10 - 11k less than full retail including options. Mine was first registered by the dealer, used by the dealer principal for 5-6 months was £11k less than retail, very loaded (including rare cruise control) with 2500mls on it. It would have been rude not to buy! Now the summer is pretty much over you might get an even better deal, especially as the 57 reg is now with us.

I think they priced new too high, close to the boxster and they were struggling to sell at that price. Sub £40k is more realistic and from what I read there's this sort of discount for a new one.

Go on do it!

PDC and wind deflector although latter can be bought as an accessory and fitted at a price! Maybe 6 CD and I Pod Aux - in again the latter is an accessory (c£40 aand easy to fit).

You only get assist free for 6mths IIRC on a new car - I looked into it and decided it wasn't worth it.

not much use on a coupé.. =)

you'll get a good one now, the ex-bmw demo's aren't as thrashed as the novelty has worn off.. usual car buying techniques apply, as per the second post, go ahead and enjoy, and by god you will.. =D

Im glad i found this forum! You guys are full of gr8 advice!

I currently own a 350z which i love so i am still trying to convince myself to properly look. I havent driven one yet but i know as soon as i do my mind will be made up so i am leaving it till last and researching everything else 1st. I have gone as far to enquire about my insurance.
Just want something with a little more power than the Z for not much more ££. Reading the forums it looks like i have found it!

One thing i have noticed is u usually get more posts complaining about faults etc. Im used to it from the Z forums. But there are very few on here which is good news!

Hopefully join the club soon. Knowing what im like i will go out one day and come back with a new car in the afternoon out of the blue!

Mines a Y*07, i dont think theres any main reason, i guess theres alot of other cars about with similar Regs.

Cheers

All moving very fast. Just arranged a test drive tomorrow morning!

Going to see a Y*07*** listed at £32850

Colour:Titanium Silver
Interior:Black Nappa leather
Date of registration:June 2007

Bluetooth phone prep
ConnectedDrive-Assist

What you all think? What price should i be targeting? Looking to trade in my 350z but will probably die at the price they offer.

Cant wait to see one in the flesh. I favoured the blue but not sure i can pass up on this one if i can get a good offer!?

The UK cars are prepped at Thorne near Doncaster before going to the dealers, so the management cars etc. get registered in Sheffield hence the Y* - I think A-L is the range.

scottie1979 the silver is rare and it looks great too :D

Ah that fits. Mine's got a Sheffield reg. Originally I thought it was due to being registered by the Chesterfield dealer but later spotted the reg no consistency. There used to be a similar R*04*** pattern for BMW mgt cars.

Yep, I actually think I got that wrong above, and Sheffield is L-Z - Leeds is A-K. Although if yours is a dealer demo rather than a management car it's likely it was registered in Sheffield because that is closest to the dealer in Chesterfield and not for the reason above.

The R* cars were Bracknell cars, registered in Reading.

The new number plate system is good in this regard, in that you can spot ex-management cars a mile off.
