Buying a Z4 at the Weekend Payment Methods options?

I haven't read all the replies so apologies if I am repeating anything.

Forget bankers drafts when it is you who is recieving the payment. They are no more secure than a cheque. Either can be forged. And, believe it or not, a bank could record the reciept in your account when you take the draft to the bank,... but later remove it if the draft is found to be forged when going throgh their clearing processes. Forged drafts are a big issue at the moment.

On electronic payments there is good news and bad news. The good news is that these days if you and the buyer both bank with well know high street banks you can actually arrange almost instantaneous payments and so the recipiant can call their own bank 10 minutes after the payments is made and get confirmaiton that the moneuy has been recieved AND cleared (check with your bank). The bad news is that (despite assurances form the bank).. you CANNOT do this on a weekend,..only a weekday. I was promised in advance that I could recieve a payment instantly the last time I sold a car. The seller, sat in my living room, called their bank and made the payment,...the money left their account,..I called my bank 10 minutes later...and they said nothing would happen on my account until Monday morning ! So there I am with the angry seller having lost £10k from their bank account and me refusing the give them the keys until I the money hit my account....

In future I would ask the seller to bring cash on a weekday and meet me at my bank to pay it in.

And when selling put together an invoice/record of sale stating the names and addresses of the buyer and seller, the date, amount and method of payment,..state clearly "SOLD AS SEEN" (so no come back on issues they discover after sale) print two copies and have buyer and seller sign both,..one copy each.

Banker's drafts can be easily forged, and the bank you pay it into cannot guarantee it's genuine. The first thing you will know about it being a fake is when your bank calls to tell you about a month later.

If you want to use a banker's draft, then go with the seller to your bank with the seller and get a draft drawn up in front of them. Then go to their bank and see them pay it into their account. Then get the paperwork signed there & then.

+1, Best way, even better than cash, when you give him the draft, take a letter of sale (signed by both parties) and your part of the V5 document

This is the best idea I have heard of so far.

I've bought several vehicles with wads of cash offa ebay ...... never a problem.
Could be the way I do it though ....... :D always go with 2 mates and be street smart ...... ie, make sure the person you are dealing with and the address you are doing the deal at are the same as whats on the docs. Also helps t ask for photo ID .........

Rang my bank and i confirmed that i could do a fast payment upto £10,000 on a weekend over the phone, the lady on the phone then sugested that i give the phone to the seller so the bank can confirm to him that the money has left my account and will be in his account within 2 hours!

Not a fan of the large sums of cash idea, since the guy that bought my 5 off me said his son and grandaughter had a gun pulled on them in birmingham when he went to collect an X5 for about 17,000 cash! The police did catch them in the end and lock them up!

In this day and age what numpty walks around with £17000 in their pocket to pay for a car - but there must be some......

Any reasonable seller will accomodate any reasonable suggestion on payment - they want to sell the vehicle! Agree the price - go to the bank and direct transfer to the nominated sellers account all done and confirmed in minutes. Job done - complete the paperwork, get the keys and enjoy. We can all say what if....... but sensible checks looking at documentation etc etc can eliminate all but the most sophiticated swindle. Remeber such peolpe rely on your greed so will (amongst other things if it's all bogus) reduce the price by ridiculous amounts to secure a sale, not have the right documentation, not know a lot about the vehicle etc etc.

When I bought my car earlier in the year I payed a deposit of 400 cash and then arranged a Bank cheque made out to seller (not a Draught) which cost me 20.00 I then rang seller with the cheque details and he then calls his bank and passes on the cheque details, his bank ring my bank and confirm cheque has been issued, seller then delivered car to me.
You cant ring the bank yourself to confirm the cheque has been issued due to data protection but banks will talk to other banks no problem.
This worked fine for me and the seller particularly as he had agreed to bring the car from Leeds to Essex on a low loader for me.
Hope this helps

Personally if you can't get to a bank together to do a transfer then I'd take a wedge of notes for such a small amount as £10k. Do all your checks, V5 HPI, dodgy VIN plate, etc. then pay, take the car and the V5 part.

Even then they could withdraw the money the same day can't they? Hence no money in account when draft drawn.

So much easier and less stressful trading in (when selling) or buying from a dealer for more expensive cars.

F&&k it! Don't buy a car it's too hard, just get an oyster card!

Phew!

Lol - there is an element of truth in that. Buying from dealers is easier but they charge way more give peace of mind and of course make you wait until funds are cleared.

Private is all about weighing up the risks, the buyer and seller gaining confidence and trust in each other and then conducting a deal by a mutually acceptable method. Whenever you exepct to turn up at the door, view the car and drive it away it's likley either the buyer or seller will expose themselves to an unaceptable risk, be that mugging for cash, bounce drafts, cheques, stolen cars, etc.

That the price of a private buy/sell

I asked for driver license, passport etc and ran a full person check before accepting the funds. The issuing bank refused to state whether the draft was issued by them, either to me or to the buyer which was strange. All I wanted to know was if draft number 1234334 had been issued by them so I knew it was valid, but they point blankly refused.

Yep, but you can simply pay by debit card to the dealer - instant cash transfer and take car immediately. Done this my last two purchases
