Hi All,

I am looking to buy my first second hand Z4 around £8000 and wondered if you can share with me some words of wisdom when buying. Which model, engine, what to look out for when buying, any issues?

Cheers

if your looking for £8000 you will probably be looking at a high milage example. i bought my car just over a month ago with 38,000 miles on and it was a bit off that price.

i would say that engine size depends on what you can afford in terms of fuel etc. i would look out for all of the general stuff when buying a car, rust, crash damage etc.
and if the car has corroded split rims you may be looking at a few hundred quid to sort them out as i am now finding out!!!

aside from that, my 53 model is in very good condition, i took a gamble at a bmw approved auction and it seems to have paid off apart from the wheels.

hope this helps, GOOD LUCK!!

I would add that it may be prudent to 'afford' 9-10k to get the right car. 8k on something that needs a major service/tyres or something mechanical fixing easily turns into a 9-10k car.

that auction is in brighouse by the way. Its BCA (british car aucions) you might find a bargain or two. they have a website
http://www.british-car-auctions.co.uk/Default.aspx?page=58

the bmw are on every 2 weeks i think and there was some fantastic examples!

Word of warning - my local dealer, Sytner in High Wycombe are gagging for more Z4s, they say they can't get hold of them for love or money. So you may find you have competition for the best cars (especially 2.5 and 3.0L manuals).

There is a guy on Pistonheads called V8Mate who is in the car business and spend time at these auctions - have a look for the recent articles on auction prices on that site.

Sytner and BMW are stuggling for Z4's and the dealer prices show it, sytner have two 2007 2.0 SE's with lower spec then mine and they want £16,450 and £16,850 for them, i paid 13.5k back in Jan for mine. I think you'll struggle with 8k, especialy for a 3.0l so you may have to look at the 2.2.

Rekon you might get a high miler for £ 8k. If it has a full history it'd make a great buy, these things go on forever. The 3.0 engine was used in everything, 3 and 5 series etc, so plenty of 200k milers about.

How things change so quickly, there were loads on the market 2 months ago. Alas I may need to up my Budget, :( Thanks to all for your comments.
