Buying a new television. What to go for?

My 42" plasma died a couple of months ago and I'm going to pic something up in the sales to replace it.

After something 42" -50", nothing smaller. Last one was Plasma, but LCD seem to have come on a long way. Don't know much about the LED type.

Not interested in 3D at all, so just needs to be HD ready.

Any advice from anyone in the know?

What to look out for?

What does the frequency measurement effect? e.g 200hz or 600hz

Which brands are the best or which have common faults?

Are Sony worth paying the extra for?

Can't beat Panasonic I think. I got one with LCD Edge, (white Edge-LEDs around the rim of the screen which uses a diffusion panel to spread the light evenly behind the screen, also allows thinner panel) great picture. Lots of HDMI ports, scarts, card slots, network connection for multi media functions. I think the Sony/Panasonic debate is a lot like the Canon/Nikon one......goes on and on!

Sony is the poor relatives, check on the repair statistics of those. Pretty poor.

I have a number of Plasma's and an LCD as well, there are too many aspects to be able to advice a best one for you as it depends on a number of factors.

Quality wise - you can not beat a Plasma, full stop. An LCD still does not come close if you want top quality. Also note the viewing angle of an LCD is never as great as a Plasma.

Since the demise of the real top make, Pioneer, Panasonic is now the industry leader.

I fully agree with PVR, I have a 50" Pioneer plasma which is three years old and is stunning, completely out guns anything else I've seen. Also have a 42" Panasonic plasma and it's almost as good - 9.5 out of 10.

I would always go plasma, and with Pioneer now out of the market Panasonic seems to be the way to go.

Good luck with the hunting.

Prices go up dramatically when the size goes up. What are you looking for? 50" is considerable more then 42".

I went for the professional series, hand picked etc etc.

Any good?

I'll probabally be happy with 42" tbh, just 50" might be nice with the xbox. :P

Or this?

50" £600 Tesco :?

Samsung LED. Bought one about 12 months ago. Fantastic picture. Had 3 Samsungs now and never had a problem.

Samsung is what I'm replacing. About 4 years old. One of the main boards died.

EDIT:

42" seems alot cheaper.

This maybe?

Have to say just bought the big brother of the What hifi tv of the year a Sony 46EX503 and the picture is just amazing, especially at the price and if you buy now you can get the VAT back

Had a few people around yesterday and all stated that the picture quality was superb.

What happened to pioneer?

They made an LCD (friend has one, great set) then pulled out of the home entertainment market altogether.

Based on current form, I think my next set will be a Philips LED - near 180 degree viewing angles and huge contrast ratios (thanks to localised lighting, limits bleed to plasma levels), but they aren't cheap at the moment.

Hark, given the price range of the ones you've posted I'd go plasma (IMO better at that price), and because it's being used for gaming - LCDs have a slight delay, most have a gaming mode, but comes at a cost of picture quality. Picture performance can be quite personal, so have a look at a few - just make sure you get the remote and switch off the "shop mode" > basically contrast, colour, etc turned up to make everything look vibrant compared to the displays on either side - assuming the store has bothered to switch it on. Panasonic is a good shout - I actually think they've caught up with the outgoing Kuro models in terms of picture, if not build quality - but don't doubt Kuro would be better if there were a current generation. Worth checking Comet for Panasonic Plasmas, they have in the past had models specific to them which if they work for you are great value.

Samsung. They make most of the screens for the manufacturers mentioned anyway.

well when pioneer shelved all their kuomo plans they sold/gave panasonic all their tech a guy that fixed my brothers kuomo told him my panasonic was a better tv but in reality pioneer made high grade monitors hence the box with the pioneer "tv " i personally think my tv is the nuts as my brother who is a bit geeky about this stuff says he will buy a panasonic when his pioneer gives up sony dont actually make any of their own products ive been informed just buy thr tech and sub out the work but as always its a personal choice !

Buy from John Lewis..and stay away from Currys.....all JL come with free 5 year g'tee. And their customer service if any issues is first rate. Currys just tell you to f*** off!
