Buying a car without V5

Hey,

Not been a member long but would really appreciate some advice.

A went to view a Z4 yesterday and agreed a deal however we then hit a bump as he wants to keep his number plate. To do so he needs to send off the V5 and get a replacement but obviously this means I can't take away my slip from the V5.

The guy seems very trust worthy, i know all the best con men do :o , and he explained to me that the V5 doesn't prove ownership of the car only who is the registered keeper which I have found to be true. I'm planning on picking it up on Sat where he will write me a reciept to prove the ownership.

He says he will get everything sent off and then when the replacement V5 arrives will forward them onto me.

Also planning on getting a private plate myself, not bought it yet, is there a way to get it put straight onto my plate if i purchase it or not.

Cheers,

Nik

EDIT: Forgot to add I put down a small deposit on the car but did not take it now as we agreed a price, subject to a fresh MOT and data check, and he also wrote me a reciept for this.

changing plates can be a pain

last car i sold, the guy bought it and returned the plate to me later, i was very messy

like he says, the v5 does not prove ownership, just make sure all details are on receipt, vin no. car reg, his address, etc etc, even check the vin number to that on the car and log book

The process described is valid and is the method I shall probably use as I don't want to stick my plate on retention if the car doesn't sell for six months.

Regarding your pp you will need to wait until you get the v5 back in your name

OK so here’s the procedure:
1. The seller of the vehicle will need to complete a DVLA Form 317 and then send of the V5 and current MOT certificate to DVLA with a fee of £105. In return he/she will receive a retention certificate for the personal number, details of the new age related number plus a vehicle excise licence for the new number expiring at the same time as the old one, a ‘new’ MOT for the new number, a form to take to the number plate manufacturer to get the new plates made up. In due course he/she will also receive the new V5. In the documents received there will also be a small buff coloured envelope pre addressed to DVLA to return the old excise licence. AND don’t forget to tell the insurance company of the plate change!
2. As the new owner you can make the change to your personal plate at the local DVLA office. Take in the V5, MOT and excise licence. You will receive the new excise licence straight away with your personal number – they will retain the V5 and MOT and in due course you will receive the new V5 and MOT with the number changed to your personal plate. And again don’t forget to tell the insurance company of the change.

Zanim - pre purchae check list in my signature. If the current seller has all the other relevant documentation for the vehicle - service records receipts etc. then if youi are happy with the vehicle then it should be OK. AND whilst the V5 doesn't confiorm ownership it's a good strating point...!

In terms of sale receipt the guy i bought mine off used the what car receipt .. which is quite a good proforma....
