Buying a car without the V5

Hi all,

Went to see a cheap runaround today priced at £700. Car has tax, test, some old paperwork and mots, 2 keys but the owner took it in part exchange recently and as such only has the slip from the original v5.

Do you think its risky buying a car without the full doc? He says he took it in px against some painting work he did for the previous owner (of 14 years) as it had been sat. He put it through the MOT and is looking to get his money out of it. Problem is I dont know where the car is registered to or anything.. dodgy?

Logbook is not proof of ownership but does help obviously
If the basic HPI check reveal,s no concern,s then i don,t see the worry
What i would do though is fill in a V62 as soon as you buy the car & this will result in a logbook with your detail,s

Its a 1988 VW Scirocco Automatic, there are probably about 200 left in the uk of which about 20 probably have as little rust as this one

I wouldn't turn it down flat, there is nothing terribly unusual here with a PX car and some basic precautions should provide reassurance.

Wait for it to be MOT'd which includes vehicle ID confirmation based on the VIN.
Check the VIN is correct according to the MOT and that the two VIN numbers are the same located under the bonnet and on the door jam.
Run the registration number through a basic HPI service, I use a text based service that costs about £3 and will flag any theft/finance/write-off issues

Have a common sense look round the car for evidence of locks being changed (lots of different keys). Glass etched with registration marks is common on older cars see if they the same, if one is different that's probably not a problem and just means a single window was changed from a scrapper, but if they are all different from the VRM it's suspicious.
Does the story add up? does it look like it's been stood for 14 years? TBH I'de be more concerned about the usual work required to re-commission a car after that period than something dodgy with it's background, i.e. brake callipers, hoses, pipes, rad', water pump, hoses, suspension bushes, battery, tyres etc etc
Ask for details of the person they took the PX from and try to give them a call, most people don't mind chatting about their old motors.

Good luck with it

I once bought a car without a V5. What I did do was to ring the DVLA and tell them I was going to look at said car and told them the rough location of the owner I think I told them the street and they confirmed that that car was registered on that street, not perfect I know but it gave me piece of mind that the owner was the registered keeper. :)

Thanks guys, I'll wait for the V5 to arrive and will see if its registered to where I met him as im a little wary.

Also gives me a chance to haggle a little more..

Wouldn't wait around for too long though...given the lack of rust, someone will be eyeing it up to chuck in a 3.2 vr6 lump.

See if the seller will allow you to condition the sale pending the correct paperwork.

+1

There are so many checks you can do online these days. Only thing might be hard to prove without is the number of previous owners. If your not to worried about confirming that I can't see what the issue is.

IF they are that rare then it has to be worth perusing.

Hmm he now says he has the V5 in his name and registered address :tumbleweed:

I will see if he does and if it matches the VIN I think ill go for it..

a 700 quid car with no docs.... walk away and buy any of the other 100000s 700quid cars that are floating about.

we are not talking about anything amazingly rare or special here are we?

2nd one down even comes with a blond bird according to the pic...

Is it the 2.8 V6? That would be a lot of car with leather etc for £700...

Thats the Corrado pvr..

Top end scirocco's came with 1.8 litre 16v engines. This is the 1.6l 8v putting out a might 75bhp! Although it does weigh under 920kg

Sciroccos are rare and I love them, owned one for 4 years (longest ownership of any car I ever had) I do miss it..
