Buying a car long distance

I'm looking at buying a car from a few hundred miles away and the garage has said they will bring the car to me for a test drive/look over.

What ways can I protect myself in this case as essentially a bloke is just going to turn up in a car. How do I make sure it's his car to sell and make sure everything is in order. I'm worried that I'm handing my car over in part-ex and could be left with a dodgy car in return.

I will do a HPI check but what else can I do?
 
For peace of mind, it's worth it.

I drive 4-6 hours a day with work and it's really not all that bad.
 
Try and ask for ask much detail as possible prior to the day. Ask them to email old service records,Registration numbers, VIN numbers, MOT certificate numbers, details of services,garages and original dealer etc and use the internet/telephone to do some research.
Its amazing (worrying?) what info is available. A few telephone calls to previous garages may reveal work undertaken/required.
If the seller is relucant to give the basic info, then I would ask why.

Thanks for all your help guys I've set all the tips in motion.

To be fair they seem pretty legit and were good to offer the delivery but I'm always on the back foot with garages.

As I've said they've been very good so far. I'm looking to go down there now so my origianl question has been answered.

Interested in any feedback though.
