Buying a 2003 BMW Z4 · Coupe 2D

Hey ,

Not an expert here—just a student who loves BMWs and might be about to make a questionable decision 😅

I found this Marketplace listing and wanted your take on whether it’s a decent deal or a total trap:

2003 Z4 | 96k miles | clean title | $3,500

Seller says: no issues, service light is “just a sensor,” engine/trans are solid.

Honestly, if it runs for a year I’ll be happy—then I’ll scrap it or trade up.

Photos are attached. Please roast me and tell me what looks sketchy. I’m test driving it tomorrow—what should I pay attention to and what should be an immediate “walk away”?

Look for any type of coolant leaks since at this point if it hasn't been replaced it will probably leak slowly (or very noticeably if not addressed). Usually coolant leaks from the front of the motor where the thermostat is at, or at the waterpump if the seals go bad and they're not hard to replace. It also usually leaks coolant from the resivoir or the radiator plastic connectors. Another place it might leak from is under the intake since there are 2 plastic hoses carrying coolant (one for the heat pump and another is a return line to the resivoir. A bit tougher to replace)

Oil usually leaks from the valve cover and the oil pan gasket. The valve cover is easy to do, the oil pan is a pain since you have to drop the sub frame. Take a scanner with you to see what code it's throwing. Most likely it will be an o2 sensor or a misfire (replace with new coil packs.)
The orange bulb on the dash is probably on because one of the front or rear bulbs are out so just turn on the emergencies and high beams and do a walk around.

Make sure the top goes up and down and listen to make sure that the motor is not stuttering and ask if the seals hold up during the rain. Usually the pump motor works fine as long as it water doesnt get into the housing but sometimes if the top doesn't work it could be due to metal fatigue casuing a break in the wires that run along the top (can be fixed just by finding and soldering or crimping the connection)

Also check if the steering feels fine since these use electronic steering not hydraulic, and while they don't typically go bad, if has any sort of issue with steering just pass on it since replacing it will be costly

Suspension and brakes are like any othe car so just look for the usual wear and tear on those and make sure they're not overdue for maintenance.

So basically just look for any coolant leaks, while they're not hard to deal with they're just usually annoying at 150k miles I ended up having to replace all the cooling system parts on mine using fcpeuro parts and i think the total came out to ~$700
The price is fair for the miles if its been taken care of but I would look out for any of the aforementioned issues to try and negotiate a lower price and sweeten the deal.

Welcome. A straight six Z4 in Maldives Blue. What’s not to like?

This particular example looks pretty worn from the interior shots, but 96k miles will be no problem for the M54 engine if properly serviced. Check records for regular oil changes.

In addition to BTM’s comments above, check the dampers all round. If they are original, they will have ceased to function as dampers, and the ride will be much improved by replacing them. Broken rear springs are also a common problem, so check for rusting through.

Water ingress is a killer. There is a gap in the carpet under the seats. Get your hand in there and feel for wetness. Also check the battery compartment for water.

If you do find water under the carpet then it needs sorting asap. The airbag modules get damp and fail and they are very hard to find replacements for, plus then finding someone who can code them. In my UK experience, dealers can't.

See if you can find someone with a code reader to check any underlying issues.

Being told 'it's just a sensor' is a bit vague for me. There is a chance the intake elbow at the throttle body is split, making it run lean which will put the light on. But it could be something a lot more expensive.
