Business or Professional speakers

I picked up the new car earlier (20i M on the Jan - March finance deal) and absolutely love it.

So I drive it home and I'm sat there on the drive with the quick reference guide and the manual just getting familiar with everything. I notice from looking through the documents that the head unit on the business sound system and the professional sound system look different from each other. There's no picture to show how the standard system should look.

I ordered business but the head unit in my car is the professional one. Have I perhaps got lucky and they've installed a higher spec one in? Is there an easy way to tell which spec it is? I know prof has more speakers but I'm not sure which speakers prof has that business doesn't.

Any quick and easy way to tell whether it is a business or professional system? I'll check to see if it has the full set of speakers rather than a few less if I know where I'm looking.

Cheers

Alex

AFAIK the business or professional is just the speakers and amps that drive them,

I think all non idrive systems are professional head units

I am not 100% sure as I have I drive with the business speakers

Mines business and has a large speaker behind each seat but not one in the middle. As far as I know all the head units look the same.

Edit: Here are some photos I took ages ago to post in a thread:

Yeah mine must be business.

I'm in Durham too cjp. If you see a DSB, give me a wave! I've been waiting for 3 months and haven't seen another DSB so there's a good chance its me.

Mines a black one with the forum sticker in the back, CJP on the plate too

I see a couple of black ones, and a DSB one near where I work in stockton, but other than that no too many

I wonder if that extra speaker will make the system sound that much better - Or is it just the kudos it brings?

basic speakers are reportedly really poor and comprise 4? (or is it 6?)speakers in total
Business speakers (11 in total) are a £565 option upgrade with a 245w amp - they are what i have and are good
Pro speakers are a £855 upgrade , have 14 speakers and a 650W amp and digital sound stage - reportedly v good (but I am happy with my Business Speakers and iDrive Pro Nav)

We have the business speakers in our Z4 and for a factory fit they are pretty good with a good amount of bass from the subs behind the seats.

The professional system adds extra speakers and also provides more EQ settings to play with on the head unit, the business system is just standard treble and bass with left/right front/rear balance.

I might look at upgrading the factory amp over the winter months, as I have two nice JL Audio amplifiers that I was going to fit into our Jeep, but they will probably be better suited to the Z4.

Thanks for that ! The car I've ordered also comes with the Business speaker/i Drive Pro Nav option - I'm sure it will be more than a match for my E85 with the carver set up.

The car doesn't arrive til mid July and the wait is like watching a pot of paint skin over.

At the minute, I have more questions going around in my head than you can hoy a stick at!

I think that as we get older the top end of our hearing seems to deteriorate , so bass is not really a problem. I have found that I seem to need an increase of treble to make things sound ok!

I paid for the pro speakers, turned the volume pretty much right up when driving open topped on the motorway, and now two of the speakers keep buzzing at medium volumes. Now need to either keep the volume low to keep the buzzing down, or turn them right up to try and drown it out. Not what I expected from their top line.

Interesting!!!!!

I also got the pro speaker package and although I had full intentions of "burning" the speakers in (was advised once to play low volume music for several hours to make sure the rubber was loose...dont know if this is bs or not!) I had the roof down and couldn't resist it! Put some Van Halen on at full blast and got distortion from the left side...the tweeter I think.

Havent noticed it since, but wasn't impressed.

I noticed that although the fronts were loud, the rears weren't, however, turning "surround" on seems to make the rears louder and in my mind means I don't need to pump so much volume through the fronts.

If yours are bad most of the time, I'd take it back and get them changed under warranty....a £900 upgrade shouldn't do that!

Speakers should always be 'run in'! I had an old 12" Kenwood sub in many of my early cars. All my mates had expensive new subs, mine sounded sooo much better than theirs. May have been that I made the box the correct size and theirs were of the shelf items, but I think it was much more likely that the speaker was run in correctly!

Agree run the speakers in, I did to a degree and I am impressed with the business system in my zed, plenty loud enough, plenty of bass when needed and enough mid and high end tones...glad I got upgraded speakers, would like to hear the pro set up to see the difference

I'm looking at maybe a month or two of ownership at the point the buzzing began, so don't think that a lack of running in would be the issue. Distinctly unimpressed at the buzzing, but being a true Brit I don't like complaining (apart from on forums clearly). It is due it's first service in just over a month so will kick up a fuss whilst I'm there and try again

+1 The sub enclosure design and build is crucial to getting the best out of a sub.
