Business CD Player Head unit won’t power up

Hi

Looking for some guidance on here. The head unit in my 2008 E85 Z4 failed on start up (it’s possible the aux-in cable may have earthed on the seat runners).
The backlighting of the volume knob and the CD slot seems to work but the unit is otherwise dead.

If it’s not been earthed by mistake, is a head unit failure fairly common?
If it has earthed could someone point me in the right direction towards the fuse?

Any (relevant) suggestions would be appreciated.😎

Thanks in advance

Stephen

Now I could be wrong but I don't think you can earth the aux cable as there is no power to it being a signal receiving wire.

Secondly I have never heard of one of these stereos failing but I'm sure someone here has and will post shortly.

It won't be anything to do with the aux in socket. If you drop the glove box to access the fusebox you will see a card inside which will identify the Radio fuse. I think it's a 15A one from memory. If it's blown I think I know what your problem will be!

I thought that but when you plug in the aux in cable when the stereo is live you get a very loud sound through the speakers which is a surge through the stereo.
Similarly if the phone end of the aux in cable touches metal bodywork whilst the other end is plugged in you get the same sound.

Thanks for the advice about where the fuse sits. I’ll give that a try shortly.

Had the same thing happen to my 2007 Zed 4.
I removed the 2 fuses and checked them, both were okay.
Put fuses back in and it started working again. Give it a shot.
Hope that it works for you.

Thanks all. The next time I went back to the car the battery was really dead.
It seems that my battery gave up after 3 years in the car. I think it was stood for some time before I bought it.

Apparently when the voltage is dropping as the battery dies the first thing to drop out is the cd radio head unit. The next time I started the Z4 up after replacing the battery the head unit fired up immediately.

So, if your cd radio head unit goes dead for no apparent reason, your battery may be about to die...

The zed is really peculiar when the battery volts get low , there's no real pattern to which issues you get , glad it's now sorted
