Bushes

Hi everyone. Just a quick one.... I think the bushes need doing and was wondering if anyone could recommend a garage in/around Farnborough (GU14)? Also, would a "clunking" noise be indicative of the bushes needing replacing?

I took the car for MOT and the mechanic said he could hear the clunking noise too but he struggled to see if it was the bushes, he claims it probably is (he could see a bit of play on the front bushes) and noted it as an Advisory.

Thanks....

I dont know any one there but Mark Purcel in Oxford is very good but probably a bit far.

Yes it will probably be the control arm bushes ( lollipops ) I would spend a bit extra and get ARB bushes done as well. Just done mine and it makes a world of difference.

Machine Monkey, thanks so much for your reply, I think you have hit the "nail on the head"! I could swear that the creaking noise is coming from the back (not the front), so I'm starting to think it is the ARB bushes that need replacing and potentially not the front control arm bushes! This is backed up by the fact that the mechanic at the MOT didn't seem very sure it was the control arm bushes and said he couldn't really see anything but he just put it down as an advisory anyway....

No problem the control arm bushes are a week link on these cars. If you order the hole part instead of replacement rubber parts they are very easy to do. If the cost is not much more i would recommend doing both.

My ARB bushes where actually oval and you could see that by taking a wheel off. The ARB is actually forward facing so in front of the control arms. So might be the control arm bushes after all. Mine looked like they where ok but after replacing they obviously where not.

Good luck

If you have a clunk when swinging side to side, that's normally the RTAB's. Rear trailing arm bushed. To tell the truth they're a bit of a bugger to change yourself. As Monkey has said, the lolipops are a very common cause too. I'd do those first, as changing them is never a bad thing, and see how you get on. If it doesn't make too much difference (it'll make some difference no matter what) I'd look to the rear bushes (there's A LOT of them though).

Thanks guys!

Excuse my ignorance but my mechanical knowledge is almost non-existent....

I thought the ARB Bushes were on the rear of the vehicle?

The clunking noise happens as I am driving along (not really side to side movement) and seems to happen more over bumps etc. The sure fire way to replicate it is when I drive up the multi-storey car park at work, as soon as I take the right bend up the incline, and the back wheels hit the incline it appears to "clunk" on that right rear corner. Any ideas....?

You have a anti roll bar front and back.

From what you have described there. You might have a broken rear spring another common problem. To check it take the wheel off while the car is on the jack you should be able to give the spring a good look over. Its normally one of the tails that brakes. The bits at the top and bottom of the spring.

Another one is an incorrectly seated rear spring, the bottom mount can spin, if it does, (due to it being an angled piece) then the seat is not "tall" enough for the spring to remain perfectly in place, you'll see what I mean when you look.

Hi "GingerTosser" (hard to say that without sounding rude!), thanks for the info. Did you use them just for MOT or for anything more? Also have you ever had any recommendations of them before you went there? Thanks, Marco

Hi mate,

Have a look at my other post from today and it explains in more detail

After picking my car up today I'd definitely recommend. Prices are reasonable and really good customer service too
