Hi,

Just had my car (z4 3.0si) tweaked at Independent, quite well regarded. I asked them to check Brake Discs and Pads.

They said slight lip but no need to change etc, maybe after next set of pads.

Anyway, had a few questions, should i go BMW discs, when needing replacement and pads, or do something else? I have no idea lol.

They also mentioned front bushes need replacing...deep joy, i guess just the normal ones, nothing special.

They also mentioned 1 of the rear springs is cracked, therefore they recommend that both are replaced. Should I stick with standard BMW, or is it worth doing anything more than that?

Thanks,

Steve

Springs breaking are a common problem - you might want to try complaining to your dealer in case they do it for free as there's been so many, lots of people have replaced with aftermarket to stop this happen, lots have gone OEM again.

I'd personally stick to OEM for the disks though, especially if your Indy will fit them nice and cheap.

Also you don't have to replace both springs. They are a design that does not sink with age and BMW themselves replace only single ones. Reality is the other may well break as 30,000 seems a common figure for then to go at.

One common change is to EBC discs and greenstuff or redstuff pads as the pads are lower dust. OEM are excellent at their job though.

Looks like yours is in a similar situation to mine!

Just failed MoT on a broken offside rear spring and a tyre, and advisory on pads. I've got a pretty noticeable lip on the front discs so I'm going to do discs and pads together. (They didn't suggest I change both rear springs though, just that I replace the broken one with an OEM part)

Have a little search around here, there's loads on the springs and brakes. As far as springs go, the standards are known to break (check the list here - http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9219). So, many have replaced with Eibachs, which lower the ride slightly (15mm on a 3.0) are better than the standards.

On the brakes front, I'm leaning towards brembo smooth discs with EBC redstuff pads, but there are loooooads of options, so best to have a little search about here, see what other people have and their verdict :)

Ive just had to have my front bushes done too...

and the discs are looking rather worn - but are as yet fine. Am thinking of EBC upgrades when the time comes...

Eibachs it is....will wait for pads and discs to go, hopefully next year as I only do 5k per annum :)

Ahhh, mmmm, if my back spring has got a crack in it, and im replacing with Eibachs, then i need two....or do I need to also replace the front ones as well, as the Eibachs are lower ones? Mmmm I feel more cost coming on now.

if you're swapping to eibachs, then you'll want at least two.
if you don't want the rear of your car to be lower than the front and your handling to be all over the place, you'll want four :/

.... and the front are a lot harder to fit (read money) you will need a full geo set up to correct for the now lowered car and of course you need to consider the implications of a lower car.

Hi,

I decided to go with OEM, the Eibach's were burning a hole in my pocket as i would have had to replace all of the springs, deep joy. Too much money.

£760 for Bushes, Software Update for Radio, Roof Key Fob Thingy, Ball Joint/Arm, Ohh and 2 Springs.

Maybe in the future :) Plus I need some cash for new tyres and refurb on alloys, then i can drive the car with only the prospect of new discs, pads and maybe calipers next year! Woopeee! Brembo! (my mate can fit all of those)

It seems the guy i bought the car off wasn't as honest as I thought, limited the truth. He had apparently recently replaced the ball joints, or not!
