Burning Clutch....

My car now has about 1400 miles on it.

I keep finding I get a burning clutch smell in the car - its probably caused by me just not being used to manual (although I can drive my Mrs' Qashqai fine) and the electronic parking break - but anyone else have this problem in their early days with their E89?

How would you rate your clutch control? Do you hang on the clutch on inclines? If your clutch control is good then there should be no burning smell, not even from a clutch thats bedding in.

I think I am ok - with clutch control - would understand if I was on a ramp for a long time but its sometimes just when pulling away - as I say may be me just getting used to manual again and missing hill start assist and the bloody electronic parking break - I really hate that thing.

I dont think its the breaks - its not linked to any enthusiastic driving - more just stop starts.

Thinking about it the qashqai doesnt have hill start assist either

Well I'd say if its reproducible and you're concerned, then of course visit your dealer and show them for their advice.

Think thats what I will have to do - they will probably blame me!

Interesting about the hill assist. My 23i has it, I didn't realise the newer ones don't.

I've gotten used to the electronic parking brake - what annoys you about it?

its off or on - nothing inbetween - I forget to put it on sometimes when I park

Yea I can't count the times I have had to pop back to the car to see if I set the handbrake and not once have I not which I suppose is a good thing..

I dont - its just bad habit from having an auto for a while that you put it in park and it don't go anywhere - should have got an auto :headbang:

I have a 23i. I think the engines only just big enough for the car. Doesn't have much low down torque so you have to give it a bit of welly to get it going. I noticed especially when cold that the clutch would judder , as though not enough power being delivered, so its trying to stall the engine, which has been reduced a lot by removing the clutch delay valve.

I would say the 1.8 probably ain't powerful enough for the weight of car, especially with any turbo lag, you could be slipping the clutch a lot to get the thing moving.

Just try giving it more throttle and don't delay releasing the clutch.

Can't understand why they didn't fit hill assist to all cars, its a good feature.

Its just penny pinching by BMW again, they made a bit of a cock with the brochure some time ago stating the 2.0 had hill assist when it didn't, upset a few owners on here when realised it wasn't fitted. All cars fitted with an EPB should have hill assist as standard, it just makes life a little easier as you have less control with an EPB on gradients. Its never bothered me that much as it comes natural now between letting the brake off and applying the throttle.

German car manufacturers really are stingy compared to Jap manufacturers. I'm currently comparing a Suzuki Swift Sport against a Volkswagen Polo R Line as looking to buy in the spring. The Polo costs 2K more for starters. The Swift has Xenons, cruise, climate, pearlescent metallic paint as standard, twin cam 16V 134bhp compared to the Polo's 8V 104bhp TSI engine. With the extras to match the Swift the Polo comes out at 4K more over the Swift. VW are also charging you 255 quid if you want it in white :headbang: which used to be a standard non cost colour. I think VW have cottoned on that white is a popular colour now so charge you extra. Same with BMW, Merc and Audi :( so I think Jap is the way to go in the future.

Jap reliability is prob better too.

I think the niggles on Jap cars are alot less having owned a few Toyotas, Mazdas and Suzukis in the past. Reliability of the Audis, BMWs and VWs I've owned has been good but its the niggles that let them down. I would rate VW above Audi and BMW. I'm not really sure I will buy a new BMW again.
