Burglary - how to deter

I brought at Swann cctv system off eBay a month ago like this one and am really pleased with the quality and being able to view on my iPhone when out. Easy to set up too.

This is to go with my yearly serviced house alarm and pir flood light.

Hopefully someone would move onto the next house that doesn't have these bits fitted.

Its always a case of having better security than your neighbours - sad but true. Most are just chancers and will just look for the easy option. I mean if you wanted to make your house the easy option and then have them disappear when they came in that's a different matter but it is certainly about making you less attractive. If they want your car then they will try and overcome things and sometimes its about making yours isn't the easiest zed to get.
You have to remember they are professional criminals around, just as you might do lots of studying to be a spark or a business man they are doing the same with their skillset. I have seen properties with alarms set that had one room without a PIR and that was the room they went for and left the rest.
CCTV is ok - I have a massive camera on my house to make the point and I think it does help but as said you can't always get faces as some people love their hoodies, I'm all for alarms! and then security lighting. you can get driveway alarms that make an alert when someone walks up your drive.... make them make a scene and they will walk away most of the time.

Sounds like a close escape.

True pros will be in whatever you do if there's something they seek, such as an expensive car.
For the rest it's all about making it too much work or slowing progress.

I have powerful PIR controlled illumination front and rear, no bushes to hide in, etc. That's sent a few chancers off from the rear. Quality doors and windows with key locks so even if they smash glass they cannot open the door or window so have to smash all the glass and get over the jagged edges (makes it harder to drag my TV out :) ) Keys never in locks (insurance is invalid if keys are visible from outside)
Inside alarm system covers all zones if out and downstairs only if we're asleep.
Annual maintenance reduces insurance by more than the alarm cost and peace of mind.
Also use a lot of Hive lights so they can come on and off in the evening if I'm out to make the house occupied.
Decent neighbours and a few neighbour hood stickers all seems touchwood to help..

Thanks all. I have an electrician coming out tomorrow to discuss options, namely PIR lighting and an alarm. Police were round today and said there's a lot of it going at the moment - be careful everyone. If you have a uPVC front door; lift, lock and remove!

Sorry to read this - but glad no harm done and the M is safe!

On the plus side - you can now legitimately get yourself a dog! Think ours would lick the burglars mind.....

Seriously though - before going mad on securing cars and keys etc. - I am a big believer in insurance. I'd sooner lose some stuff but keep the wife and dog safe. Having a safe or similar is more likely to lead to confrontation IMO.

8 Swann cameras around mine in total  dead locks, alarm system, extra bolts on second internal door. Security lighting is sometimes the best deterrent.
Still my old car got broken into

My high security, un-removable windows from my office building were simply removed with frame and all. Need more than just physical security.

Re the back up battery - my alarm company does a yearly service/warranty for £60 - the battery in all boxes are changed at set times so to avoid failures.
My insurance likes the idea of a serviced alarm.

Well done Ronk

The Alarm panel battery should be changed every 3 years and the alarm Box battery every 5 years. Failure to do so can result in a burnt out panel, trying to recharge a knackered battery...

Its funny how people have an alarm fitted and think it will last as long as the house. 5-10 years is the most you expect from any other Household appliance (TV, Washing machine, Hi-Fi, Video), but an alarm is just a PCB the same as the rest, but people think it lasts forever ! Sensors are the same and should be updated after about 5-10 years to avoid false alarms.

From an Ex-Alarm installer !
