Muzz, how do you mean they will only come out about half way?
Do you mean the vent unit will only come half-way out of the dash?

Can you post up some pics?

Having some issues removing the vents, get them to pop out of their clips but they will only come out about half way, enough so I can get a screwdriver in to remove the headunit, but not all the way out. Refitted them and now they do not fit flush with the dash trim, have I buggered them?

Sounds like maybe the wiring has somehow got caught around the back of the vent perhaps? :\

You have to wiggle it up and down gently to get it to slide out, but it should come out fairly easily...

I managed to get the headunit out as I could get to the screws. Seemed like the vents were pretty well jammed in there.

Upon refitting, it now looks like s**t as nothing looks like it sits right.

Nothing is ever simple for me, so im going to get it professionally installed, been quoted £50 so not all that bad imo. :headbang:

Muzz - where abouts are you in the UK?

Also, If you've already had the unit out, then you'll really just be throwing that £50 away!
Take a couple of shots of what you're trying to explain with a camera (or camera phone), host them up on http://imageshack.us and post them here.

The vents are, without a doubt, the hardest b***ard things I've ever had to remove whilst working on a car stereo, and we all struggled... but got there in the end with a bit of advice.
Give the forum a chance to help you and spend that money on beer ;)

Muzz, agree with SK93 totaly, taking those damn vents out was a real PITA!

If you have a look at the picture below (robbed from a post by PVR) you can see the sponge around the end of the vent...

That was sticking on mine when I pulled the unit out. It's a difficult one as you don't want to use unnecessary force! But I've a feeling that's what the problem is, if you've managed to undo the clips at the top.

Im in hampshire.

The vents come out about half way and there is real resistance when I try and give it a good pull, definitely as though something else is holding it in.

My biggest problem is now that neither the radio or the vents sit flush with the rest of the dash panel and the vents are clearly not secured as they were (can wobble them with my finger). Something has obviously gone wrong because although I have screwed the radio back in, it's sitting over the edge of the trim so there is a lip (best way I can describe it). Unfortunately my digi cam is broken and my phone sucks. Im thinking its worth £50 just to save myself the hassle.

i've undone those clips at the top... as i broke one of the vertiacal vent guides... they're well easy to put back together comapred to that damn spring.

Try tilting the vent unit upwards as you pull it towards you. Also, if you can, remove the stereo unit again and try pushing the vents back in fully.

Hampshire's absolutely mines from me, else I'd have popped over :/

I'll give it a go, cheers.

Nottingham is quite a trek, lol.

Not sure where you are in Hampshire, but depending on what time I'm heading into London I may be heading over to Reading on Saturday morning (to work on the car). I don't have SK93s skills, but I have had those parts out myself.

skills? lol.
But if you get stuck, you can ring me and I'll see if i can help via phone? hehe.

How many zed owners does it take to change an aux cable?

I also noticed that if you close the vents (the I/O on the sides) it will come out easier. Close the vents, and when its halfway out, push up on them. Now that I've had mine out like 5 times, I have the method down pretty well. This weekend when I get to go home I'll take a video for you guys. explaining the whole process.

Cheers PawnSacrifice, but I got the bastards out last night with sheer brute force. Just got to refit them after work  :D

haha! welcome to the club!

I reckon fitting a stubby, and removing your vents should be two membership requirements for this forum lol :D

All - Not sure anyone is reading this topic anymore - but after reading this (and pvr's topic too) I took the plunge and took my tools to my precious interior - and much to the wife's surprise it all works - not too many spare bits left at the end - and nothing marked :D

Thanks for giving me the inspiration to take the plunge.

Better than the wife's standard fit 5 series aux-in IMO!

Ahh on reflection, there is some background hiss, and I've sacrificed the Sat Nav speech - but still happy with the overall results - anyone doen a HOW TO on opening up those connecting blocks, or do I just have to be brave?
